Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

Mike80

Identity missing....
  • No Head Coach yet...

The previous head coach is being contacted by any possible candidates.

A team that somehow went 3-2 through 5 weeks last year and looked to have some hope and a plan now looks like a rudderless ship in Hurricane Katrina.

So if the shitshow just has to go on in 2014, and it will, here's the thread for it all.

Sad thing is, I'd rather have a guy with HC experience like Munchak than a guy barely able to shave who has been Peyton Manning's secretary for a year...which appears to be their (latest) frontrunner (not to give them the facepalm).

unless of course, a HC retread was the frontrunner. then people would not want some cast off fired from another team and would rather have an up and coming coordinator of some sort. by the by, Gase was the first person they requested permission to interview. so, he's been their target from the start. if this flames out, both gollum and flounder will be in the unemployment line as well.

Well some "people" might, but I certainly wouldn't. I mean one can totally ignore the legitimate philosophical debate as to which option is better in general and just look at this franchise and see that they've tired the coordinator flavor of the month the last 2 times...and they shitcanned their own handpicked guy in less that a year last time. Why they would do that a third straight time is beyond me, but that's what we're going to be getting.

they tried the fired HC retread before as well with the same results.

I do not know if a retread was their initial front runner, I think we would have heard a name but the first name we heard was Gase and if they wait on him and he turns them down I have no idea what the Three Stooge are going to do then. Also, the problem with waiting on him is that most of the good assistants/coordinators will probably all be gone. I was okay with the Chud firing but thought that these guys could have someone on board pretty quickly. It is interesting that I have not seen any quotes from guys that they have interviewed because I would like to know if Banner is willing to give up control of the 53 man roster to the new HC. Perhaps he is not and that is why we do not have a HC at this point in time.

Even the retreads this team has tried have been green. Over the last seven seasons, just three full seasons' worth of experience among them.

I wanted them to get Lovie Smith last year. That's the kind of retread that's worth giving a shot to. I bet he improves the Bucs.

Yes, Mangini was that, for example. Perhaps the problem is the FO trying to create "New England lite" instead of forging their own identity. If anything, we've had more failed fruit from the Bellichek tree than anything else (Crennel, Mangini, Lombardi, etc.) and they wanted more (McDaniels, possibly O'Brien).

Might as well interview a bunch of guys so it doesn't look like you're sitting around waiting for your guy to get passed over by the rest of the teams looking for a coach. With Chud getting canned after a year the Browns will have a hard time pulling some guys away from good coordinator jobs. They probably think they are better off staying where they are and getting a head gig next year.

Chud might not have been what they wanted, but firing him after a year is going to screw them with good HC candidates for at least the next 5 years.

Well they're really kind of fucked now, one way or the other, because if the prevailing wisdom is that you don't want this job because the FO has an itchy trigger finger, then either a) you have to stay with the next worthless shithead for longer than you'd like, to establish that you gave said shithead "adequate time", or b) you keep firing the next 3-4 shitheads you get when they should be fired, and your reputation of Dan Snyder V2.0 is cemented. Either way, no one good is coming here.

That's why I never understood anyone taking the firing of Chud as a 'good' thing.
It might have been ok if he wasn't talked up by Banner and Haslam as the next great thing. If he was regarded as an interm coach with the potential to have the job long term (results willing) - then I can't see anyone taking the position.

Fact is, the knee jerk reaction to fire Chud (that's exactly what it was) has taken an even worse toll on this franchise. How can any remotely decent coach want to go anywhere the ownership and administration support their hire in public, only to pull the rug out a short time later.

I"m praying we get a shot at Quin, Roman, Zimmer... maybe Whiz. Beyond that? God help us.
