IF we beat UC 9/4/04, Jim Tressel will have best 40 game start in OSU history

I made two assumptions when putting this together: 1) JT will be the coach for the UC game 9/4/04 2) these numbers reflect a win in that game

JT is only the 8th man to coach 40+ games at OSU, the others by games:

1. Woody Hayes: 276
2. John Cooper: 158
3. John Wilce: 120
4. Earl Bruce: 108
5. F Schmidt: 56
6. Jack Ryder: 46
7. Sam Willaman: 41
8. Jim Tressel: 40

Career OSU win % of these 8:

1. Jim Tressel .825
2. Woody Hayes .761
3. Earl Bruce .755
4. John Cooper .715
5. F Schmidt .705
6. S Willaman .695
7. John Wilce .688
8. Jack Ryder .500

To be fair to those who have coached at OSU a lot longer here are the first 40 games by W/L of all 8:

1. Jim Tressel: 33-7
2. J Wilce: 32-5-3
3. Sam Willaman:25-10-5
4. Earl Bruce: 31-9
5. F Schmidt: 29-10-1
6. Woody Hayes: 28-10-2
7. John Cooper: 23-15-2
8. Jack Ryder: 20-18-2

vs scUM/B10 titles/NC's in the first 40 games:
Jim Tressel: 2-1/1/1
Woody Hayes: 2-2/1/1
Earl Bruce: 2-1/2/0
F Schmidt: 4-3/2/0
S Willaman: 2-3/0/0
John Cooper: 0-3/0/0 ****
J Wilce: NA/1/0
Jack Ryder: NA/NA/NA

**** to sum up John Cooper in a stat line:
Coop vs scUM or in a Bowl: 5-18-1 (.230)
Coop vs all others: 106-25-3 (.802)

Hurts like a bitch...those years were hell and heartbreak

Oh man were they ever.

Do you realize that even with all those early 1900's wins by scUM the series was 33-35-3 from 1904-1987!! Woody and Earl baisically overcame the first 20 years and had us pretty much even-then fuckhead rides into town and goes 2-10-1. :sick1:

I blame that jack-off Gee more than anyone. Coop's ass should have been fired on the field after the final gun of the Liberty Bowl debacle to AFA. They waited another decade and several more debacles.

I still get all pissed off thinking about that dumb hick.

Thanks Jax...yet another nightmare I was ready to forget.

Then I bet you were really trying to forget the 4th and 1 option call on our own 30yd line with 1:29 left in a 13-13 game that put us in the f****ng Liberty Bowl huh? :wink2:

For those to young to remember or that managed to completely block it out; Hot Tub Johhny decides to run an option with a QB that made Karsatos look mobile in the above situation vs scUM in the '90 game. Needless to say he got stuffed, scUM then kicked the game winner as time expired. A completely deflated and unmotivated OSU team(along with 25,000 of their closest fans)then fails to show up for a Liberty Bowl and gets pasted by the freakin Air Force Acadamy.

Thus the pattern was set for what is commonly refferd to as "pulling a Cooper" - lose the scUM game and sleepwalk through the ass beating a less talented but more motiated Bowl opponent lays on you.

OK, now that all that evil shit is back up to the surface I am going to go have a drink or 3 and hurt the cat. :pissed:

JT's place in OSU history

ALL time OSU coaching records by win % (min of 5 years)

1. Jim Tressel 49-13 (.790)
2. Woody Hayes 205-61-10 (.761)
3. Earl Bruce 81-26-1 (.755)
4. John F Cooper 111-43-4 (.715)
5. Francis Schmidt 39-16-1 (.705)
6. John Wilce 78-33-9 (.688)
7. Jack Ryder 22-22-2 (.500)

Woody's first 5 years: 33-11-2 (.739)/ 1 NC/ 2 B10 titles/3-2 vs scUM
JT's first 5 years: 49-13 (.790)/1 NC/2 B10/4-1 vs scUM

Also fwiw, Woody won at a 71.8 % clip over the next 5 years/1 NC/1 B10/3-2 vs scUM. If the same proportions hold true JT would be at about 77%/1 NC/1B10/4-1 vs scUM in the next 5 years. Don't know about you all but I'll take that.

Historic times we are living in boys and girls.

EDIT*******
BB73 brought this to my attention appearently I forgot someone

Sam Willaman, who was .695 for the 5 years from 1929-1933.

Where do we sign up for another 4-1 stretch over scUM with an NC over the next 5 years? I'll take that as well.

If Jt stays here for another 20 years I think he will eventually get a little something put in the shoe' to remember him just like Woody.

I think Tress has some more NC's to win, especially if we go to a playoff system, which I hope happens in the next 5 years.

people have always wondered what OSU could do if we learned how to play offense. That day has dawned. Perhaps we will need to reload/rebuild a little on D next year, but the stereotype is clearly smashed. We will not have to win games 10-6 the next time we make a run for the NC.

great post btw, Jax.

I love Tressel...and I think things are on the rise. I don't know if we will get another 4-1 stretch against Michigan. I'll take 3-2. I mean...Tressel has their number...but at the same time...this is Michigan, and to expect 4-1 is kind of crazy. It's crazy we went 4-1 in the first place...it's AMAZING. To do it again would just be unbelievable. 3-2 would put him at 7-3 for the first decade...i'd take that in a heartbeat. Tressel is doing the right things. If we win our bowl game, we will likely be a Top 5 team. And this would be the third year out of five that we'd finish in the Top 5. That's amazing!!!
