No playoff spot for the SEC ... Really.

Carmen Ohio

All-American
To Mississippi State: Is beating Auburn still considered a quality win? To Alabama: Does sqeaking by Arkansas and LSU and losing to Ole Miss make you top 4? If Ole Miss loses at Arkansas or beats MSU why should you be there? If either of you lose to Missouri (lost to Indiana) or Georgia (lost to Florida) in the SEC Championship game... why should you be there?

Why this 3:50am tirade? Out of an abundance of boredom and 3 Bacardi-Cokes I decided to watch the LSU-Arkansas replay on the SEC network. It was a true battle of mediocrity between two teams who took the top of the SEC to the mat. But to hear the commentators still talk about a so-called "mighty
SEC" made me want to hear what the Buckeye Planet thinks.

Could make the same arguments about Ohio State losing to a bad VTech and squeaking by a bad and reduced Penn State.
I don't think the SEC is half as good as ESPN wants us to think they are, but there's still about 7 teams anyone could make an argument for... not a clearcut year, and even the undefeated is a paper tiger in the weakest division of the weakest conference.
It says a lot that the only conference w/a media narrative pushing for 2 entries is the SEC... still based on over-rating crap like SCe and Aggy.

They are definitely declining. However, the same thing that brought the B1G down will be needed before people stop giving them the benefit of the doubt, which means come bowl season, they need to lose.

That happened last year with SEC losing both BCS bowls. Didn't change anything, both losers in the preseason top5 while an impressive winner like MSU was left out - never rising above 7 in the AP and 5 in the Coaches.
Teams with similar record that have jumped MSU when MSU didn't lose -- Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, UCLA, Oregon, TCU, Kansas State
Teams with similar record that didn't fall below MSU after they lost and MSU didn't lose -- Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Notre Dame

The SEC also went 7-3 during bowl games. So while the BCS games put cracks in there, it wasn't enough. B1G was 2-5 in bowl games.

Yes they beat such power houses as Rice, Houston, Georgia Tech, Duke, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Oklahoma State.
So they're basically 3-3 against B1G, B12, and FSU with home field advantage. And lost 3 of the 4 biggest games.
It's not exactly news that the SEC' bowl lineup is littered with cupcake matchups... like most of their OOC scheduling.

I am not impressed with their top-tier teams this year at all...they have plenty of good teams, I just don't know if they have a top 4 team this year. In year's past, they absolutely did. This year, no way in hell do I think a 2-loss SEC team should make it in. If Miss. St. loses to Ole Miss and Auburn beats Bama, every team in the SEC has two losses. Plus there is the championship game where a 2nd loss in the West could take place if not during the season. Or a 2 loss SEC West team could lose to a 3 loss SEC East team in the championship.

Now a one-loss SEC team likely deserves to be in just because the consistently good teams they play in conference...not great this year, but good. However, the disparity between the SEC and other conferences this year is very, very slim imo.

How about: they should have to go on the road - which doesn't mean down the street to NOLA, over to Cousin Jerry's place in Texas, Arizona or Florida, but someplace where rebel flag belt buckles are not in fashion.

I don't understand why Mississippi State is ahead of us. SEC folks will be quick to tell you they beat 3 top ten teams in consecutive weeks. Looking back, two are unranked (Texas A&M, LSU) and one is currently #14 with 3 losses & Alabama still to play (Auburn). That win is their only win against a team that is currently ranked. On the other hand, OSU's top 2 wins are against opponents that are currently higher ranked than Mississippi State's top 2, and both game were on the road. At one point does the playoff committee asks itself "How good in reality is Mississippi State's body of work?" and "Is that body of work better than Ohio State's?"

Sweet Joesus, this thread is silly. Let the season play out. I think that if Ohio State wins the BTCG, their 1 conference championship will be better than Mississippi State's 0 championships, even if it is in a terrible conference like the MAC, or wherever Ohio State plays. Personally, I still hope Ohio State gets left out. I hope Florida State gets left out, even though they finish undefeated. Stick 4 SEC teams in there, then pimp how great the SEC is for getting 4 teams in there, and then kick the confederacy back out of the country. Why the union let the south win that war so that we had to let them back in is beyond me...

When BTN owns the rights to the playoff games?
