It appears the Ohio State University Marching Band was the target of unsportsmanlike behavior at the hands of some Nittany Lions fans.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
Neither school is happy about what happened in <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Happy</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>Valley</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
With nearly 110,000 people attending the game, <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Penn</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> officials say it is possible there were "a couple jerks" among the fans.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
OSU graduate Evan Mohr says it was much more than that.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
"The threat of physical violence, people standing on hood of my car, mud balls being thrown," Mohr said of the environment before the game.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
OSU band director Dr. Jon Woods says the band’s march towards the stadium got physical.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
"I saw a fan pushing their way into the ranks of the band, which is frightening,” Dr. Woods said.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
His feelings are echoed all across online message boards where Buckeyes say attending Saturday’s game was the worst experience they ever had.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
One <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Ohio</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> band member posted a message saying someone urinated into a bottle and threw the bottle at the band. That is in addition to grabbing, punching, and yelling of profanities the band endured.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
Dr. Woods says the conduct definitely crossed the line.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
"This was without a doubt the most hostile environment that I've ever experienced at a college football game,” the 21-year veteran director told 10TV.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
An unofficial website for <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Penn</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> shows Lions fans saying they're downright embarrassed by the behavior of fellow fans.<o:p></o:p>

Buckeye fans across the country say they should be.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p> </o:p>
“One <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Penn</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> guy just grabbed another guy and threw him up against the car for no reason,” <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Ohio</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> fan Matt Snezik said.<o:p></o:p>

OSU's Marching band received a letter of apology Monday from <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Penn</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>State</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>'s president and the school’s band director.<o:p></o:p>

Some PennState fans are blaming the late-night kickoff for the excessive behavior, saying it gave people more time to get drunk

This is an excellent point. Football fans should not be expected to act like humans beyond a certain hour.

I went to Happy Valley two years ago and it was one of the more positive road experiences I have had. This year I strongly recommended the trip to friends who were considering it. They now want my hide.

During the game they showed a clip of JoPa at the pep rally Friday night. He was demonstrating how to make noise everytime Troy went up to take a snap. He was really playing it up. Kids were going nuts. I understand he also made derogatory comments about sweater vests. I am a homer but it is fair to say his act showed no respect to his opponent.

Certainly not directly blaming JoPa for the fan behavior but when a coach sends signals to students that he is looking for help and doesnt' place any qualifiers don't be surprised if they are creative in interpreting his request.

Happy Valley is also a unique environment in the Big Ten. Very isolated. It is easy to get that campus focused and worked up.

I seem to remember our fanbase acting pretty pathetic during our night game. I agree that late games are asking for trouble due to the bad eggs in every fanbase. We have plenty of reason to be pissed, but I don't know that we have any right to be throwing stones here.

I don't recall any OSU fans attacking the opposing band...

true, but I haven't read about anybody threatening or swearing at little children either. Personally, I'd say that's lower. All I'm saying is that a minority of idiots ruined our rep a few weekends ago.

Agree. Empty soda bottles and urine filled bags will do nicely.

Actually I do agree. I was as angry as anyone after the Texas game and saw much of the behavior first hand. But there is little likelihood that the specific folks complaining about Happy Valley are the same specific folks who acted up in Columbus.

I made the trip to Happy Valley twice with TBDBITL. We didn't have any problems beyond verbal abuse, which is pretty much expected. So, maybe the night game was the culprit.

The only place I remember physical contact was at Michigan, where we were pelted with all kinds of things, and had people trying to grab hats, instruments, etc.

I should clarify, this is extremely surprising. I think what some may have done to texas children is worse, but that is just drunken idiots, and that's hard to control. It's not hard to notice TBDBITL getting attacked. I suppose they did notice, and wouldn't let them march as a result to keep from embarrassing them.

    Any chance this makes sportscenter?
