You can't actually record a broadcast directly to Blu-Ray like you can with say a VCR or some DVD-Recorders. There are ways to record or transfer the DVR recorded file to your PC. Then with that file you can do a few things to play it back. You can just store it on a Hard Drive and play it back on your PC in the future (or hook up a PC to your TV to play on a big screen). You can transcode the file into something that is burnable onto a Blu-Ray disc (but that is expensive both for the Blu-Ray burner and the blank Blu-Ray discs = $10 a pop). Or you can transcode it into a file that you store on an external or networked drive that can be played back through your TV via an xbox360, PS3 or other media player device.

I think it is also possible (not sure how easy though) to make a Blu-Ray type file that is burnable to normal DVD-R discs. So you can play it back on your PS3 or Blu-Ray player and not have to buy an expensive Blu-Ray burner or Blu-Ray discs.

Hope that helps answer your question.

I've ripped 720 pi to dvd and it was fine. The only problem I run into with 1080pi is the size of the file. It's hard to fit a 10+gig file onto a dvd5. If anyone needs to do this for some reason let me know. It still is better then watching a dvd,and isn't that hard to do.

Right now I transfer from my DVR to a DVD+ recorder. It shrinks the picture to letter format (?) so I don't get the full screen, but I get a much better product than I would going from a non-HD channel or using VHS, but it's definitely not HD. I looked into the new TIVO recorder thinking it would record in HD, but it's a no go also.

I'll try and post a few sample clips of the different compressions later this evening or tomorrow.

Did you ever get any feedback or make a decision on the format you are going to use?

I have the raw Wisky game posted and I figure I'll start with that one and edit out the commercials so that there is no duplication of effort. I really do not have a preference on the format but I think it would be nice to make it as univeral as possible.

Thoughts?

Here are some samples I've put together. I'm not getting any feedback on what compression scheme to use so I'm somewhat at a loss for what people want.

I checked out the DIVX file... it looks good, I think I need some additional software for my edits.

I've got the HD Purdue game up on FTP right now however I am missing the first 2.5 minutes due to the Texas game. I think MSChwade said he had the first 2.5 minutes in 4:3 and could probably splice.

I do have the first couple minutes of the game in 4:3... I'll download yours because I almost missed the entire first quarter because they had the ND-UNC game on in HD instead

I'm [censored]ed... so I recorded the game on ESPN Alternative on my DirecTV signal the other day so I had the beginning of the game in 4:3 format.. I went to go play it today on my DVR... it's a gray screen.. I go to play other recorded material, it's gray.. so I reboot my DVR... The 4:3 ESPN Alternative recording doesn't even appear in my list anymore Everything else works fine. UGH. Sorry to let you guys down.

No big deal... not much happened in the first 2.5 anyway.

I tried for the second time to re-watch (equates to 3 times) the game today, I can't get passed the beginning of the second quarter without becoming completely bored.

Dammit! I didn't even think about this... but Big Ten Network shows a 3-hour replay in HD and I missed it, we may have been able to get the first couple minutes from there.
