This is the suburb where I live.

This is downtown Cape Town

Here are some really bad places that are Apartheid's legacy...where the poorest live and the object of reconstruction and development here

Free houses given to shack dwellers, nearly 4 million so far

Free condominiums given to shack dwellers...

This is Detroit...

Not really. They took over some old parts of Soweto that are being bulldozed and replaced with free houses.

There are informal settlements located nearby Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and other big South African cities. Crime is high in the informal settlements and there are areas where recent migrants are living in corrugated iron shacks.

But, the desolation of District 9 is over the top. This isn't Rio. Anywhere you find the informal settlements, you will find reconstruction and development townships being built.

I don't think we'd have any of these left from the Apartheid days if Zimbabwe hadn't collapsed and sent us immigrants to the tune of 20% of our population.

I appreciate the comments guys and yes I did take offense at the asshole of the world comment.

I did think of Soweto when I saw the movie.

But my comment about not sleeping was strictly based on there being a couple of million extraterrestrial beings with very deadly weapons in South Africa.
