Straight 6 with Chris Smith

<p><img align=left src="http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/CHRISSMITH12_21200.JPG" border="1" Hspace="12" Vspace="1">When you watch film of South Point H.S. quarterback Chris Smith, it is very evident that the young man has been blessed with a rocket arm and a warrior's mentality. At 6'3", 224 pounds, Chris has the size to survive in the pocket, but that competitive nature of a true athlete often takes over in the film. As protection fails, Chris shows his excellent mobility to escape and then use that cannon of an arm to make the defense pay. Chris currently holds offers from Marshall, Ohio University, and West Virginia. However, he is counting on the summer camp circuit to help new offers start rolling his way. Chris found the time to take a few minutes away from his track season to speak with the BP Recruiting Team for the "Straight 6."
1) When you think of Ohio State football, what comes to mind?
CS: Of course the great history and tradition. Any boy growing up in Ohio that's a football fan dreams of how they would look in scarlet and gray. This past season when I got to attend a couple of games and experience the atmosphere from the sideline, I felt very honored and humbled that I even had an outside chance to possibly be a part of that in the future.
2) There is a story circulating on the message boards of you making a 60-yard throw from one knee. Can you elaborate?
CS: To tell you the truth I've done that quite a few times. That's one of the drills that my father taught my older brother (Jarrod) and I when we were very young before we even started organized football. It seems to be good for building arm strength and your throwing motion. We still do that in our workouts. Sometimes it goes a little less and sometimes it goes farther. We both have put it through the uprights with one knee on the 50 yard line.
3) This is your senior year...what goals have you set personally and for your team?
CS: My goals are doing whatever I can to help my team win, make the playoffs and keep advancing. I don't really spend much time being concerned about personal numbers. If I throw and run for a combined 3,000 yards, and we win that's great, but I'll feel just as good if we win and that number is much less.
4) When your career is over, how would you like people to remember
Chris Smith?
CS: I believe that if you are secure and at peace with yourself as a person, that really won't matter much. But since you asked the question, I guess in truth I don't want to be remembered as a quarterback or #7. I hope that someday I'll be remembered as a good person who just happened to play football.
5) If you were analyzing yourself on film, what would you list as
your strengths and what needs some work?
CS: I feel very uncomfortable talking about myself. It seems like much of the time if you make a statement it gets turned around and people just pick you apart, but I guess that comes with the territory and I need to get more at ease with it. I do know that no one is perfect and I'll do my best to improve myself as a person and as a quarterback. I believe they go hand in hand.
6) What are some of your favorite things to do away from football?
CS: I enjoy working out, movies, video games...just the normal stuff. I also spend most of my time with my family. My brother Jarrod and his wife Bethany recently became parents to Maddy and I'm looking forward to being an uncle and spending time with her.
