The deception and moving around a lot intrigues me though.. it would screw up the QB's pre-snap reads in addition to confusing the offensive lineman's blocking schemes which could lead to a disaster for the offense. |

Great post and a very informative read. I know football but it is interesting to read from someone who knows the responsibilities and terminology. Makes it more enjoyable. The numbering system has certainly changed since I played in high school. Of course, they no longer wear leather helmets either

I was referred back to this post from DL's blog, and after reading this statement, Austin Spitler popped right into my mind. He would fit exactly what is needed at the Mike.

3-3-5 D
Its funny how things evolve. As a high school defensive coordinator we used the 5-3-3 defense as a base defense. There were times the stand up defensive end would drop or support run or pass rush. Its funny because that defense we played in the 80's was thought to different at that time. Now it has evolved from the 5-3 to a 3-3-5. Different generations and philosophies keep being reborn based on the offenses and those philosophies.
Just a side note there was a game were we played a 2-3-5-1 defense on the last play of the game. The head coach said to me: What the hell is that? I simply replied: We won't get beat deep on this play. By the way the offensive line was so confused on of the defensive ends actually sacked the qb to end the game. |
