The "Secret" Team Meeting

i know that it wasn't really part of the presser, but perhaps you missed the reports about the part of the team meeting where Tressel made one group of players stand up (possibly the one's with the misdemeanor arrests?) and told them, in front of the team, 'if you screw up again, YOU ARE GONE.' perhaps you also missed the part where Tressel made another group of players stand up (possibly those with shady grades, or a propensity for misconduct?) and told them, in front of the team, 'if you screw up one single time, you're suspended for a year.' i'm pretty sure that the policy you are looking for has been established...

I'm sorry, but I have to raise the bullshit flag on this one...that is not something that Tressel would likely do.

You know what, I would tell ole Gene Smith to shove it up his ass. The grades are phenomonal under JT and the NCAA investigated that part of the program and it appears to be legit. Id say JT needs to crack a little harder on these kids, but to threaten jobs Gene needs to go if hes going to issue unwarrented threats.

BOSTON, MA- According to a new report from Harvard School of Public Health researchers, the prevalence of recent marijuana use among U.S. college students rose from 12.9% to 15.7% between 1993 and 1999, an increase of 22%. Most of the increase occurred between 1993 and 1997. While rates did not increase further in 1999, they did remain at the higher 1997 rate. Use of other illicit drugs followed the same trend, rising significantly between 1993 and 1997, then changing little between 1997 and 1999.
From this report app. 84% of the student population did not use marijuana recently during the years 1993 to 1997 with little change from 1997 to 1999.

I second the BS flag on that one. I have seen that statement only in a message board post. Also, JT HAS clearly stated that he has no plans to change the way he disciplines players and that he has Smith's support. The apporach in that post would be a dramatic and foolish change.
Also, I think folks who are reacting to any statements about JTs job being on the line are reading to much into this. The presser and all of the interviews are part of a PR effort to quiet the public. The only statement I have seen relative to JT losing his job was to the effect that a coach has responsibility for behavior problems of his team and if he can't control them his job is in jeopardy. Is that news? Is there any coach in any program college or HS where that is not true? Putting it out to the press the way it was done gets exactly the sort of response he wanted - "Gee, Smith is playing hard ball." I see nothing of the sort.
I also would guess that the drug testing was coming down the line well before any of the recent incidents occurred. They took advantage of the circumstances to announce it now.
Absolutely nothing that Smith or Tressel are making puclic right now is being done without careful calculation. I salute them for that - it is part of their job.

I agree I don't think that JT is in danger of losing his job over any of this. He is an outstanding coach and a gentleman. He is doing his best not to let a few bad apples ruin it for theh rest of the team and the rest of the buckeye community.

i think JT should tell the team that if they screw up again that person won't get a ring this year. that should be motivation enough.
