Nothing special needs to be done to preserve them. Here is my process -

Drill fairly large holes (something like a 5/32 or 11/64th drill bit if the nuts are large enough).

Let them dry that way for a day or two - at least until any moist areas have dried up.

I like to use shoe laces to string mine. They hold up well and are easier on the neck than something smaller. You can get them at the Dollar Store cheap (a dollar if I remember correctly).

If the lace wont go all the way through use a smaller drill bit to push it.

You can find scarlet and gray beads at places like Michaels. Lots of folks use white instead of gray. That is WRONG. This is tOSU - not IU.

Oh8ch drills holes in his nuts and ties them up with shoelaces. But he's wise enough to not pound them with a mallet.

You da' man, Oh8ch!

MARSHALL02 could go either way
Buckeyes need to be husked and dried, and then you can take your dremel or a fine drill bit and drill a hole through them. Do not let go of the nut or you'll burn out your dremel motor (not kidding, this happened to my aunt). You can then string your buckeyes on whichever type of leather, string, hemp...your choice. You could knot between the nuts for effect. Have a good time...just don't eat them. Nasty.

Exactly what I've done...Drill them, let them dry, get some kind of string to your liking, scarlet & GRAY beads, and wham bam thank you ma'am you've got yourself a buckeye necklace.

Instead of using a shoe string I use kind of like a waxy type string from Michaels
