So our cat just had kittens...
My company's "work" cat finally had her kittens last night. We figured she was getting ready to as she was running everywhere and yowling at us all day long. Came in this morning and she had chosen one of the boxes in our bindery room down the stairs, so she's out of the way and quiet. Jury's still out on how many there are, I say two, coworker says one. They're beautiful, black and grey (The momma's a pretty frosted gray color, don't know what the papa looks like as she got knocked up before we took her in.)
I've never had a dog/cat/animal who had babies before. I've never actually had a dog/cat anyway (had a rabbit, turtle, catfish and a few parakeets, but no "conventional" pets.) Does anyone know what we're supposed to do? We've been trying to leave them alone as much as possible. Someone said not to touch the babies, so we haven't done that either. I'm so clueless. Any other suggestions / comments / warnings? Please?

Do what Bob Barker says:

if the mother is a young cat (or any age I guess) make sure she doesn't try to kill the babies... my parents a cat that had babies when she was really young and she tried to kill them. I guess she just didn't know what to do with them so she was going to try that... they all lived though thanks to my mom.

She's nursing them right now. We have every kitten she gives birth to spoken for; several customers have given us their phone numbers and said "as soon as they're weaned, we want one, the mother is so beautiful!"
We are taking a collection to have her spayed, but we have to check with the real owner first. We know who the owner is; he turned her out on the street without a collar or anything but still claims ownership. He knows she stays with us most of the time. She's a wonderful cat, very well-behaved and loves people. Such a shame that they just threw her out.
Does anyone have any advice as to the care of the momma and kittens right now? Do we need to give her special food or anything?

She'll eat when she wants too, but she's gonna spend pretty much all of her time with the kittens. That was good advice on the not touching of the kittens... at least for about a week. another thing, when their eyes start to open there will be a time when they are just about all the way open but just stuck in one of the corners... whatever you do, don't help open them all the way, there's a good chance you'll make the cat blind.

WOW that's great advice; had no idea about the eye thing. I'll pass that along to my coworkers.
