Dual Layer (8.5GB) DVD burner under $100

I don't normally post deals on this website as there are already sites for that, but I know a number of you burn DVDs and have probably run into the situation where you couldn't fit an entire game (or movie or whatever) on a single 4.7G disk. The dual layer drives (8.5GB) are coming out now and I'm really surprised how cheap this one is:

NEC ND-2510A 9-in-1 Double Layer DVD±RW Dual Driver (Black) for $98

Anyone here use this or similar?

I was also thinking about picking up a case and making it into an external USB2 drive. Anybody done this?

If I buy all this, will I be able to make back-ups of my kids' movies or will I still need some type of hacked software to do that?

I think that you'll still need some additional software to copy your kids' movies. I read an online article this week (msnbc?) that talked about how this is currently a legal matter between a software company and the movie industry. I'm not positive, but this may be the case.

Also, let me know if you're able to get the burner to work as an external unit.

You will need software to decrypt the DVD and then another to copy it to the new DVD. There is a lot of software out there that does this. Check the TechTV Screensavers site. It can get complicated as there are multiple menus and languages included in the DVD. Just run a google search, it will over load you. There is software now that will decrypt a 8.5GB DVD and shrink it to a 4.7GB DVD with little loss of quality. Based on the DMAC? this is illegal but big brother will not come and get you unless you start to sell or offer titles online for download.

I am surprised the drive is out and so cheap. I would suggest you go to NEC site and get the specs. The other factor will be the dual layer DVD media. The industry has been notoriously slow in getting the recording media out to keep up with the fast changing drives. The other probelm is the crazy amount of formats and speeds out there. Do you want to burn at 2.4 which could take hours to record a DVD or wait for 4X, 8X and now 12X & 16X.

The drive may also require a firmware upgrade to burn the DVD's.

I spend as much if not more time on the hackers sites as I do here. Technology is still one fast moving crazy world.
