Plumbing Question
OK, got a home improvement question for all you handy types out there. I recently took the tank off a toilet in our house to paint behind it. Painted, hooked it back up, flushes and works fine.
However.
Many times when running water somewhere else (sink, shower, tub), when you shut that water off, the toilet water runs for a couple seconds. Probably not a huge deal in terms of water cost, but it's annoying.
Any ideas?

Are you sure it only happens when other things have been run?
My brother in law had a problem with a leaking tank a couple of years ago. He kind of blew it off. He got a $870 water bill.

The only time I've noticed it is when other things are run. It seems to start running right as you shut off some other faucet, and stops after only a couple seconds.
As for the guts...umm, I'm not positive what the high tech option is. It's got a rubber gasket between the tank and the base, if that's what you mean. Pretty standard float pulls up a lid on the drainage hole, water line hooks over the top of the tube setup.
There's no external leaks that I can find...harder to tell if it leaks to the bowl, but wouldn't it run kind of constantly if that was the case?

You should move.
Seriously, though. I can't imagine it has anything to do with running other appurtenances. It's probably leaking. Replace the rubber flap and you should be good to go.

your local hardware store should have dye tablets that you can put into the tank and if the toilet is leaking, the dye will be evident in the bowl. You can't flush during this test, obviously.
