My dad used to have a saying:
"Nobody owes you anything, you have to pick yourself up by your bootstraps and make your way in life."
This could probably go in the Cosby thread as well....

it should be federal law that going on welfare results in castration/sterilization before the first check is collected....this will help to rid society of this gene pool....

Dihard,
or at least limit the time one can collect, and have the city/state take the kids away from the parents until they get back on their feet...

Blame the democrats! Right now poor people are actually encouraged to stay poor. If you are poor, you can go to college for free, not have to work, and make money having babies. If you have a little money (ie, you work), you not only have to pay for all the above, but you pay for the poor to have all the above as well. These people need to be encouraged to get a job, not stay on welfare.

Along about now is when someone will mention corporate welfare.
I have stated in a previous post that as an MBA student my group worked with an organization that moved people from welfare to work. The people arrived and in many cases could not read or do simple math. They had no idea how to open or manage a savings / checking account. This organization spent months getting these people ready for jobs. In almost every case it was a woman, they could not get many men to particpate. They had to particpate or their assistance would be cut off.
Once they finished the program they were given jobs. The wages were above minimum wage and they received some benefits. In most cases within a year they had quit or been fired. They did not have child care. They did not want to get up and go to work. The thing that still sticks in my mind was that they were angry that they had to work and then have some taken out for taxes and benefits.
I remember working with the director of the program. One evening we were talking about trying to get some businesses to provide training so that they could hire some people and get some tax benefits. The director who was a very positive and compassionate person told us that those type of businesses did not want to particpate in her program. She said they spent good money to get bad employees.

I'm glad you mentioned corporate welfare Bucknola. Giving massive handouts for Fortune 500 companies is something that I am very opposed to as well as regular welfare. That said, giving corporations ridiculous tax breaks/subsidies is not doing the social harm that AFDC and programs such as that are. Creating a culture of laziness and entitlement is one of the things that has hurt America in the past 35 years or so. If you are not completely lazy, there is absolutely no reason to be living in poverty. http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba/ba187/

Unfortunately, it won't. As long as there is a government and votes to get, it will always be around.
