Carlos Boozer and the Utah Jazz have agreed on a six-year, $68 million offer sheet, ESPN's David Aldridge reports, sending a crushing blow to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who made Boozer an unrestricted free agent with the belief he would re-sign with them for their mid-level exception.
Earlier Thursday, ESPN Insider Chad Ford reported that the Jazz had canceled a planned visit by the Nets' Kenyon Martin because they were preparing to make Boozer the offer to which he has now agreed.
"We just decided in was in both of our interest to go in a different direction," Jazz GM Kevin O'Connor told Ford about the Martin cancellation.
The huge offer, coming after Boozer drew interest from half a dozen teams once he hit the free-agent market, proves the Cavaliers made a significant mistake in relinquishing their contractual rights to Boozer for the upcoming season.
Boozer, recently named to the U.S. Olympic team, could have been Cleveland's next season for $695,000, but the Cavaliers did not pick up their option after, the club said, Boozer had committed to re-signing for the team's full mid-level exception -- somewhere around six years and $40 million.
Now Cleveland almost certainly cannot retain Boozer. While the Cavs have the right to match the Utah offer, they are only about $4 million under the current cap and would have to trade and/or renounce the rights to a number of players to clear enough room to sign Boozer.
According to sources, the Jazz began serious negotiations with Boozer around the Fourth of July and finished the deal Wednesday night, capping a huge offseason for Utah.

One wonders if he will turn out to be the next big thing, or the next Hot Rod Williams. He played well last year, and it's a shame the Cavs can't keep him. My guess is his agent talked him into playing some Hardball, and it looks like it will pay off for him.

The Cavs should go after Kenyon Martin. The press keeps saying how Kenyon will demand the maximum possible contract, but it looks like less and less teams are able to dish out that kind of money. If Kenyon would be willing to make any kind of sacrifice, why not go and play with Lebron. That would be one hell of a tandem, and he would have a rising center to help him out down low.
I'm really interested to see just how well Boozer does in Utah...

What the f? First, why would the Cavs ever agree to relinquish his rights unless he was ready to sign the new contract at the exact damn time? Second, why would you go to Utah and a team that is at the beginning stages of rebuilding when you could stay with a team that is a couple of years and a couple of players away from making a serious run? Damn, the only good thing the Cavs GM has done was select LeBron, and no one is dumb enough to have screwed that pick up.

Wow. What an asshole. It was a stupid move by Paxson, no doubt. The only consolation is that he'll be stuck in Utah for the next several yrs.

I don't think it was a mistake. They were trying to compensate him for having a great 2 years playing for dirt. Paxson never would have done it without a 'gentlemans' agreement in place. They just got burnt by trying to be nice to the turncoat. I loved him the last 2 years, but [censored] him now !!!!.
They had to either keep od drop his option by last week and had a handshake agreement with him.They could'nt sign him until next week anyway.
They better put Kenyon in their sites, if at all possible.
LeBron won't stay either if they don't get him some help.
