I still have nightmares to this day about having to translate Tacitus

In my Latin 104 course at Ohio State, we translated Virgil (Aeneid). It was a pain at times, but it was actually pretty interesting.
Too bad I haven't used Latin since that 104 course and I've lost almost everything I knew.

Having the knowledge of Latin, even half-remembered, is so helpful, however, in learning other languages. I took Latin in high school for two years, and then a year of French. I got tired of the teacher (same guy for both) so my final year I switched gears and took German. The first time I had to do an oral recitation in front of the class my teacher busted up laughing at me only a couple sentences in. Horrifying for a teenager of course, especially as he couldn't STOP laughing for about 2 minutes. He was flailing around, doing that choking laugh when you are desperately trying to let the person you are laughing at know "It isn't you but..sorry but..."
When he finally got himself under control, with me standing there flaming red from embarrasment of course, he explained that I was speaking my German with a thick, Pyrenees accent. Turns out three years of Latin and one of French from the same teacher with a thick accent of his mountain homeland has a lasting effect.

I came, I saw, I suffered.
Latin has helped me some with other languages (none of which I speak fluently), although in hindsight I wish that perhaps I had spent those several years learning those other languages in the first place....

Loved it! Kept me on the Dean's list for awhile.
Too bad I've forgotten nearly everything I learned about it.
