So, what you're ever so delicately saying is that it's a good thing I'm not coming up there looking to play this weekend. I suppose that I could've whored on with Otterbein or something...

When South Africa beat New Zealand for the Under-19 World Championship and you guys went ahead shortly afterwards, I was thinking it was going to be a really good day. Sorry you guys lost and that the ref sucked but congratulations on a really good season.

Next year the NC for the Rugby Bucks!

Cal, Navy Join Utah, BYU

By Alex Goff

April 17, 2005 – The University of California and Navy join BYU and Utah in the men's DI national collegiate semifinals.

Cal faced a very game Tennessee team with a rested set of front-line players and put them to the sword. Tries from Rob Weedon, Chris Gurecki, Andrew Lindsey and Joel Digiorgio paced the Bears to a 33-3 lead at the half. Tony Baker slotted a penalty for UT's only points.

It was more of the same as the fast, hard-hitting, and technically proficient Cal team simply took Tennessee apart.

It was an excellent run for the Vols, and they should be proud of a good season, but it was certainly Cal's day.

It was also Navy's day as the Middies weathered another very physical and evenly-matched game.

"It was a struggle," said Navy coach Mike Flanagan. "The last couple of times we played them we were able to get around them pretty easily, but we had no legs today. We just had to battle it out."

So they did. Center Nick Ralston scored early but Navy could not press their advantage. Instead it was Ohio State who scored, center Alex Moller running in to make it 7-5 Navy.

OSU wing Andrew Kender kicked a penalty to put OSU ahead, and you had to wonder if it was one of those games where if a team didn't score when it could early, they wouldn't score at all. The defenses tightened but Ben Pittard was able to nudge Navy ahead with a difficult penalty kick. 10-8 Middies at halftime. Kender returned the favor early in the second half to put OSU ahead by one, but Pittard came back again. 13-11 Navy.

Then a sniping run from scrumhalf Cody Albright allowed Buckeyes center Phil Nightingale to run in for a huge try. 16-13 Ohio State. Could this be the back-breaker? Not with Navy, simply buckled down and finally got some space out wide. Eric McElvenny took the corner and then fed Pittard for the score. 18-16 Navy.

"We were ahead then they were ahead, it was so tight," said Flanagan. "Ohio State brought it good."

Clinging desperately to a two-point lead that looked ready to evaporate at any moment, Navy fought as Ohio State scrapped. Only when Pittard kicked his third penalty goal that anybody could breathe at all easier. Navy hung on as time ran down 21-16.

This sets up a massive national semifinal, with GoffonRugby Top 20 #1 Cal facing #6 Navy, and #8 BYU against #5 Utah.

"We love playing Cal," said Flanagan. "People say they'd rather get to them in the final, but you have to beat them to win anyway, so we don't care. This is a great final four. You beat two of these teams to get a national title you've really done something."

In the consolation matches, which have significant bearing on seedings, Dartmouth (#20) defeated Minnesota 42-26, Air Force (#2) beat St. Mary's (#9) 39-29, flanker Tom Beers scoring three times; #3 Penn State defeated #17 Clemson 46-26.

Thought so. You've gotta respect honesty in a coach.
