RALEIGH, N.C. -- Right winger Nikolai Zherdev wants to remain with the Blue Jackets, but that could change, his agent said, if Zherdev doesn't find a home on one of the top two forward lines.
"Nikolai obviously wants to be a top-six forward," said Rollie Hedges, one of Zherdev's agents. "It would be pretty upsetting if he wasn't in the top six."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Blue Jackets' best players in preseason have been the young ones fighting for a roster spot.

That changed last night in the final dress rehearsal for the regular season
Goaltender Fredrik Norrena, returning from injury, and left winger Rick Nash, returning to form, led the Blue Jackets to a 3-0 win in the Sommet Center.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In 1995-96, a highly successful minor-league coach named Ken Hitchcock was promoted at midseason to take over the Dallas Stars.

What happened next could provide hope for Blue Jackets fans.
The Stars were only 3 1/2 years removed from reaching the Stanley Cup Finals as the Minnesota North Stars, but they had become an aged, dysfunctional bunch.
"Hell bent in the wrong direction," defenseman Craig Ludwig said.

Infusion of youth on team wasn't expected

From the time he was 10 years old, Kris Russell had been told he was too short, too small and too frail to even think about an NHL career.

So on Sunday, when Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson and coach Ken Hitchcock told Russell that he had made the opening night roster, the news hit home a little sweeter.
"Whenever you hear stuff like that, especially when you're a young kid, it can be pretty disheartening," said Russell, who's listed generously at 5 feet 10, 177 pounds. "All the people who believed in me and helped me along the way ? that's who I thought about right after they told me I'd made it."

Hitchcock glad to see veterans return to ice

A combined 36 seasons of NHL experience and three Stanley Cup titles rejoined the Blue Jackets' lineup yesterday.

Coach Ken Hitchcock is guardedly optimistic he will have that substantial body of work available to him when it matters Friday night.
Center Michael Peca (groin), left winger Fredrik Modin (back spasms) and defenseman Adam Foote (hamstring) returned to practice after virtually missing the entire preseason because of injuries.
All three hope to play in the season opener against the Anaheim Ducks in Nationwide Arena.

on the ir you need to be on it for 15 days so every player is eligible to be activated, though the roster had to be trimmed to 23 active players by today, jackets have 26 in camp (plus the three on ir)

id say glencross and beech are waived with two of those acitvated, while it be on or before opening night is my questions. they have to be on waivers for 24 hours to clear and then can go to cuse

methot is the last player/bubble player is my guess. he does not have to clear waivers based on years in the nhl/games played.

Scott Howson and his wife, Antoinette Mongillo, are settling in at Nationwide Arena after stops in eastern and western Canada, and in between.



In 1994, Scott Howson was earning a good wage, working for a prestigious law firm and dating a fellow attorney in a cosmopolitan city.
It was then, 13 years before becoming Blue Jackets general manager, that he orchestrated his most daring trade: giving up his secure living to pursue his passion.

Jackets notebook: Peca appears doubtful for this weekend

Blue Jackets fans likely will have to wait at least through the weekend to catch the Michael Peca debut.
The center missed his second consecutive practice yesterday because of back spasms, after sitting out virtually the entire preseason because of a groin injury.
Coach Ken Hitchcock said Peca probably will be held out of the opener Friday against the Anaheim Ducks and Saturday's game at the Minnesota Wild.
