Wasted chances: Jackets lose in shootout after Stars tie score with 1:11 left

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Fred Squillante | Dispatch
Blue Jackets fans watch as referee Bill McCreary signals that a shootout goal by the Stars' Jussi Jokinen is good against goalie Fredrik Norrena.
The quiet, nearly empty dressing room made it clear how the Blue Jackets felt about last night's 3-2 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars in Nationwide Arena.
So did coach Ken Hitchcock's hushed tones in the postgame news conference.
To the Blue Jackets, this didn't feel like a point earned but two points gagged away to a Western Conference foe.
"We didn't put the hammer down," Hitchcock said. "We paid for it in the end."

Michael Arace commentary: Young team means Hitchcock can't rely on old methods

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The reputation of Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock, earned in stints with Dallas and Philadelphia in a dozen seasons, is that he's hard on young players.
"No," he said, "I'm very demanding. I don't like that word 'hard.' I'm demanding."
In any case, he has never had a team like the one he has now. He has never had a team so young. The average age of the Blue Jackets is just a shade under 27. Only the Washington Capitals and Phoenix Coyotes are younger.

Jackets notebook: Norrena knew better
Goaltender familiar with Jokinen's moves

FRED SQUILLANTE DISPATCH
The Blue Jackets' Gilbert Brule (17) crowds Dallas' Matt Niskanen in the first period.
Blue Jackets goaltender Fredrik Norrena has seen Jussi Jokinen's shootout move in Olympic practices.
He has admired it from the bench and watched it on late-night highlights.
Last night, Norrena probably saw it in his sleep, over and over again.
Despite guessing right and thinking he had the angle played correctly, Norrena couldn't stop Jokinen from scoring the only goal in the shootout and lifting the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory in Nationwide Arena.

What a frustrating loss... we dictated the tempo but weren't able to hold on to the W. Hopefully the guys take this loss personal and learn that you need to play hard all the way to the final horn. The tying goal with a minute and change was unacceptable (even though it was a sweet pass). I like the way we're playing though and Boll sure does bring some energy to our team when he is out there.

3-2-1
7 points in 6 games played. Not bad so far. I like the way that the team is playing.
