Not having Foote and Fedorov hurt a bit tonight. Although the lineup tonight was what the Blue Jackets will look more and more like in the coming years, figuring that Fedorov will likely move on once his contract is up....

Agree whole-heartedly. If he wasn't upset, then I'd be concerned. We scored two, which wasn't stellar. However, as you mentioned, missing those two hurt yet we were still in position to steal one. Oh well- let's get to 95

Sharks acquire enforcer Jody Shelley from Blue Jackets for draft pick

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks bulked up for the stretch run Tuesday night, acquiring enforcer Jody Shelley from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a sixth-round draft pick in 2009.

Shelley, a 6-foot-4 left wing who's recognized as one of the NHL's toughest fighters, has no points and 44 penalty minutes in 31 games with the Blue Jackets this season. He racked up 1,025 penalty minutes while spending all of his 5 1/2 pro seasons with the Jackets, but hadn't suited up for Columbus since Jan. 12.

"He's adding some sandpaper to our lineup," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "We've looked at that for a while this year with Ryane Clowe out. Jody, we know a lot about him. He makes players on other teams uncomfortable, and he adds an element of comfort to your own players."

Shelley will join the Sharks on Wednesday before their game against the Calgary Flames.

The Sharks have been without two of their most physical players -- forward Clowe and defenseman Brad Norton -- for most of the season because of injuries, and Wilson cited the overall toughness of Western Conference rivals Detroit and Anaheim as a prime reason to make the deal.

Wilson pursued Shelley in a trade earlier this season, but couldn't land him. The Sharks have been without a designated enforcer since trading Scott Parker to Colorado last February.

"I think we've missed it since Scotty Parker left," Wilson said. "You've got to win in many different ways, and Jody brings something to the table that we need."

lets be honest okt was the best player on the ice, when thats the case how many games are you going to win? not many, if any.

no foote hurts, leader, warrior etc. hejda looked pretty league average tonite and played on the top pairing, not a good thing. hejda didnt bring his game and missed footers presence. foote is calm, composed and has competitive composure (most of the time unless hes laying to wood) that this team feeds off of.

no feds=no puck mover. phx is one of the best transition teams in the game, it showed. the 2 2 killed us and we looked ugly against it all night, it led to two goals. (the 2 2 is really a 2-1-2 for those who dont know that kind of stuff its high intensity pressure defense that waynes oiler team he played on played. pretty fun to watch, not fun to play against)


jody, ill keep this short and sweet. lets be honest, he never thought hed be an nhl guy. he is, hes played liked 380 games or something like that. hes the son of a miner, that shows, tougher than nails. this guy would walk into a fire in a gasoline suit for his team, something those in the room and those in the stands in san jose will love. hes not the best hockey player but hes beyond a stand up guy. if their is an oppurtunity to help the community, help a charity, grow hockey, help the club on or off the ice jody is the first guy there. not a fake bone in this guys body, not even in his fists. jody is a rudy type, only he had the size, just not the skills. put his desire, will, love for th game and his willingness to do what the team needs and his work ethic on pretty much any other player and well youd have a hall of famer, not that those other guys dont have that, jody just has so much more of it, he played his best every night, every practice, every workout. jody is a leader, a guy though who in reality plays a handful of minutes and thus cant be a leader, or ends up actually being a poision in the room, he understood this, he picked his spots, thus, showing his spots. he understood roles and where he fit, his teammates fits and helped with that, developed the young guys, some of who are grown up some are still growing.

maybe the best in all of this is a stand up guy goes from 10th to 2nd, from a bubble team (hopefully) a team in the hunt for a spot, to a team in the hunt for the cup. the sharks, now equipped with a guy to go toe to toe with parros should have as good as shot as any one at the cup. next time youll see him feb 27th.

ill also say this, this has been known for awhile, the sharks wanted jody. they liked what he brings to the club, on and off the ice. great guy.

Bob Hunter commentary: Life without popular player won't be easy

A loss in the playoff race is one thing. A loss of one of the Blue Jackets' most popular players, maybe the most popular player, in a sudden trade is another.

There is no doubting which loss Columbus fans feel more deeply today. Jody Shelley's trade to San Jose last night made a 4-2 loss to Phoenix seem almost positive by comparison. The trade for a sixth-round draft pick in 2009 might not have that much effect on the on-the-ice product -- Shelley had been scratched seven straight games -- but his loss to the community is crushing.

Jody Shelley appeared in only 31 games this season, prompting the Blue Jackets to consider an offer from the San Jose Sharks.



In the moments after a 4-2 loss to Phoenix, the Blue Jackets dressing room in Nationwide Arena went from sullen to shocked.
Left winger Jody Shelley, one of the most popular players in franchise history and part of the team's bedrock, was traded to the San Jose Sharks shortly after the game for a sixth-round pick in the 2009 entry draft.
"This is all I know in the NHL," Shelley said. "This is what I've been around. I've really gotten attached to this city, the fans, my teammates. It hasn't really hit me, but I'm sure it will when I get home tonight."

Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock isn't a fan of the All-Star Game.
After a 4-2 loss last night to the Phoenix Coyotes, he probably isn't a big proponent of the All-Star break, either.
Unable to decline it -- the player's union would frown on such a thing -- Hitchcock had to hope his team would play with the same commitment and attention to detail it had demonstrated the past few weeks.
It didn't happen. The Coyotes twice rallied from one-goal deficits, outworking the home team in the third period and taking advantages of key mistakes.

Within the walls of the Blue Jackets dressing room exists a secret society.
Loosely defined and rarely spoken of in detail, it is the "leadership group" of players established by coach Ken Hitchcock.
"It used to have six members," Hitchcock said yesterday as the Blue Jackets prepared to play the Nashville Predators tonight. "Now we're down to five."
The membership dropped late Tuesday, when the Blue Jackets traded left winger Jody Shelley to the San Jose Sharks for a sixth-round draft pick in 2009.

In 12 games with Syracuse, Gilbert Brule had four goals, four assists, a minus-2 rating and 16 penalty minutes. Three goals came in one game.



Jody Shelley's roster spot was filled quickly yesterday when the Blue Jackets recalled right winger Gilbert Brule from minor-league Syracuse.
"We want to get him back up," general manager Scott Howson said. "He had a little period where he was just OK, but he finished strongly there. On Saturday, in Hamilton, he was really good.
"Gilbert has done what we asked him to do. He has played a lot, he touched the puck a lot, and he has been a dangerous offensive player."
Brule was sent to Syracuse on Jan. 1. In 12 games, he had four goals, four assists, a minus-2 rating and 16 penalty minutes. Three goals came in one game.
