Balastik, Zherdev Score; Columbus Drops Road Game At Atlanta

Balastik scores his second NHL goal

(AP) - Ronald Petrovicky finished off his first three-goal game with an empty-net goal and the Atlanta Thrashers snapped a five-game losing streak, beating the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 Friday night.

Petrovicky, recently benched for six straight games by coach Bob Hartley, had only one point in three games since returning to the lineup. But he broke out against the Blue Jackets with the hat trick, scoring twice in the second period.
Petrovicky's third goal - and fifth of the season - came after Columbus pulled goalie Marc Denis with just over a minute left.
The Thrashers bounced back after falling six games below .500 - a low point for the season. Columbus, playing back-to-back nights after a Thursday night win over the New York Islanders, fell to 3-12 on the road.
The Blue Jackets were without center and assists leader Manny Malhotra, placed on injured reserve Friday because of a shoulder injury. Malhotra, injured Thursday night, is out indefinitely.
Marc Savard and Serge Aubin also scored for the Thrashers, and Michael Garnett stopped 26 shots. Jaroslav Balastik and Nikolai Zherdev scored for Columbus.
The Thrashers broke a 1-1 tie with three goals in the second period, the first two by Petrovicky, who had been held without a goal since Oct. 22, when he had two goals against New Jersey. Ilya Kovalchuk assisted on each of Petrovicky's goals.
Atlanta made it 4-1 when Aubin charged the net and flipped the puck past Columbus goalie Pascal Leclaire before crashing into the boards behind the net.
Columbus cut it to 4-2 when Nikolai Zherdev scored by slapping a rebound off Garnett past the goalie into the net.
Savard gave the Thrashers a 1-0 lead with his 12th goal on a pass from Marian Hossa less than 6 minutes into the game.
With 1:30 left in the opening period, Atlanta's J.P. Vigier was called for hooking, setting up Balastik's power-play goal with 40 seconds left in the period.
LeClaire stopped 11 of 15 shots. He was pulled after Atlanta took the 4-1 lead. Denis replaced Leclaire in goal.
Notes: Balastik's goal was the second of his NHL career. ... The Blue Jackets are 1-15 when their opponent scores the first goal. ... Kovalchuk has not scored a goal in six straight games. He has four assists in that period, including two Friday night. ... The Thrashers placed forward Peter Bondra and goalie Steve Shields on injured reserve Thursday.
im not for starting the samem goalie on back to back nights no matter how hot he is for the record.

<!-- Begin Article Body --> GAME: New Jersey Devils (13-12-3) at Columbus Blue Jackets (8-20-0).
TIME: Sunday, 5 p.m. EST.
The New Jersey Devils look to avoid tying their season-high losing streak at four games when they visit one of the NHL's worst teams, the Columbus Blue Jackets

The Devils extended their skid and lost for the fourth time in five games Friday, 4-3 to Colorado in a shootout. Jay Pandolfo, Brian Gionta, and Scott Gomez each scored to rally the Devils from a three-goal first-period deficit, but Avalanche forward Antti Laaksonen scored the only goal in a seven-round shootout.
"Coming back against a team like Colorado says a lot about our club," Devils coach Larry Robinson said.
Robinson was happier with his team's effort after questioning the leadership following a 4-1 loss to the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.
"I took it as a good slap in the face," Gomez said. "He had every right to say that, the way we were playing. After the first period, it was like the old Devils. I think we're finally realizing what this unit can do."
Goaltender Martin Brodeur has seen his goals-against average increase from 2.03 in 2003-04 to 3.09 in 21 games this season. The two-time Vezina Trophy winner has yet to record a shutout after posting 11 in 2003-04.
The Devils have struggled on the power play with only two goals in their last 40 opportunities, but they're facing a Blue Jackets team that's allowed 16 power-play goals in its last nine contests.
Columbus lost for the second time in three games Friday, 5-2 at Atlanta. Jaroslav Balastik scored his second goal of the season on the power play at 19:19 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1, but the Blue Jackets allowed three unanswered goals in the second period.
"When we give up one goal, we just can't give up the second and third one," Columbus coach Gerard Gallant said.
The Blue Jackets have a league-low 54 goals this season and leading scorer David Vyborny hasn't scored in 12 straight games. Columbus attempted to improve its offense by acquiring Sergei Fedorov from Anaheim on Nov. 15, but he has one goal and three assists in 10 games since joining the Blue Jackets.
New Jersey, which lost four in a row from Nov. 1-8, is 2-2 all-time in Columbus.
STANDINGS (through Dec. 10): Devils - 29 points, 4th place, 15 PB, Atlantic Division. Blue Jackets - 16 points, 4th place, 26 PB, Central Division.
TEAM LEADERS: Devils - Gionta, 17 goals and 30 points; Gomez, 15 assists; Jamie Langenbrunner, 34 PIM. Blue Jackets - Vyborny and Nikolai Zherdev, 6 goals; Manny Malhotra, 13 assists; Vyborny, 18 points; Jody Shelley, 58 PIM.
SPECIAL TEAMS (through Dec. 10): Devils - Power play: 18.4 percent (30 for 163), 13th in NHL. Penalty killing: 81.8 percent (113 for 138), tied for 18th. Blue Jackets - Power play: 11.8 percent (19 for 160), 30th. Penalty killing: 81.3 percent (161 for 198), 22nd.
GOALTENDERS: Devils - Brodeur (11-9-1, 3.09 GAA); Scott Clemmensen (2-3-2, 3.54). Blue Jackets - Marc Denis (3-11-0, 3.38); Martin Prusek (3-3-0, 3.22).
2003-04 SEASON SERIES: Devils, 1-0.
LAST MEETING: Jan. 27, 2004; Devils, 4-3. At Columbus, Ohio, Patrik Elias had a goal and an assist, and Brodeur stopped 28 shots for New Jersey.

Berard's OT Winner Downs New Jersey

Nikolai Zherdev Scores Two Goals

(AP) -- Bryan Berard scored off a pass from Sergei Fedorov with 13.6 seconds left in overtime, giving the Columbus Blue Jackets a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

The Blue Jackets hadn't gotten a shot in the extra period before Berard slipped around Devils defenseman Paul Martin in the right circle and beat Martin Brodeur for his sixth goal of the season.
Nikolai Zherdev scored twice in regulation for Columbus, giving him four goals in three games after opening the season with four in 25 contests.
Columbus is the only NHL team not to have lost this season in overtime or a shootout. The Blue Jackets are 2-0 in games ended in overtime and 3-for-3 in shootouts.
New Jersey lost its fourth straight, all to Western Conference teams. Detroit, Calgary and Colorado defeated the Devils before the Blue Jackets.
It was the seventh consecutive game that New Jersey failed to score more than three goals.
Marc Denis stopped both of New Jersey's shots in overtime and finished with 28 saves, raising his record to 4-11. Brodeur dropped to 11-9-2.
Except for Zherdev's goals, Brodeur was spectacular in regulation. He made 36 saves, including 14 in the third period when Columbus missed numerous chances to take the lead.
With just under 12 minutes remaining before overtime, Jan Hrdina sent a pass through the goal crease to Duvie Westcott, who tapped it wide when Brodeur cut off his angle.
Jason Chimera, Jaroslav Balastik and Dan Fritsche all had shots in succession about four minutes later, only to push them wide or have Brodeur turn them aside. Brodeur also made a lunging save on Adam Foote's shot with about a minute left in regulation.
Both of Zherdev's goals tied the game. He made it 2-2 off a pass from Hrdina at 4:35 of the third, and 1-1 midway through the second when he blasted a shot from the left circle past Brodeur's stick.
Brian Gionta and Martin scored for New Jersey.
Gionta had his 18th goal with 3:06 left in the second period, putting the Devils ahead 2-1 when he slid a backhander through the legs of Foote and Denis.
A well-timed play led to Martin's first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for New Jersey with 9:24 left in the opening period.
Jamie Langenbrunner circled behind the net with the puck and delivered a centering pass to Martin just as Sergei Brylin picked off two Columbus defenders to the right of Denis. Martin scored on a wide-open wrist shot.
Game notes: Linesman Tim Nowak left the game at 15:39 of the first period after being hit in the face with a puck shot by Hrdina. He returned for the second period. ... Nashville and the New York Rangers have a league-high four shootout wins. ... Columbus forward Jody Shelley and New Jersey forward Darren Langdon each drew fighting majors when they slugged it out in the second period. Langdon landed five blows to Shelley's head after Shelley's helmet popped off.

The CBJ have won 4 out of 6. They are going to need to go on a looooong winning streak to get in playoff contention, but at least they're playing better hockey.

I usually go to 8-10 games a year and watch every game on TV. Before the CBJ, I was a huge Flyers fan.....Tomorrow will be the first time I've ever seen the Flyers live, and my sons - he's 2 1/2 - first sporting event. I can't wait....

If you ever want to go to a game, let me know. I get offered freebies all the time, but usually turn them down. As a matter of fact, today I was offered four more tickets for tomorrows game - great seats, btw, center ice, lower bowl - and ended up giving them to my staff.
