OSU dominant in fencing...

Buckeyes Sweep NYU Duals

Jan. 23, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Led by a 5-0 record from its No. 1-ranked men, the Ohio State fencing team competed at the New York University Invitational on Jan. 22 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in New York City in the Buckeyes' first intercollegiate competition of the season. Three of the men's wins were over Top 10-ranked teams, including No. 2 Notre Dame, while the fourth-ranked OSU women's squad posted a 2-3 record, which included a win over No. 8 Yale and losses only to Top 10-ranked opponents.

The OSU men defeated NYU 20-7, No. 6 St. John's 18-9, No. 5 Columbia 20-7, Yale 25-2 and No. 2 Notre Dame 17-10. The Buckeye women topped NYU 17-10 and No. 8 Yale 16-11, but fell to No. 6 St. John's 15-12, No. 3 Columbia 17-10 and No. 1 Notre Dame 17-10.

In the much-anticipated showdown between the Fighting Irish and Buckeyes, which finished 1-2 at the national championships last spring, the OSU men won sabre 5-4, dominated foil 8-1 and narrowly dropped epee 5-4. It would mark Notre Dame's only loss of the day as four Buckeyes went 3-0, including two-time defending NCAA foil champion Boaz Ellis (Jr., Moshav Zippori, Israel), who won all three of his bouts by 5-0 scores.

Also going 3-0 against Notre Dame were freshman Mike Momtselidze (Kansas City, Mo.) in sabre, freshman Andras Horanyi (Boulder, Colo.) in foil and junior Christian Rivera (Bloomfield, N.J.) in epee. Posting 2-1 records were senior Jason Rogers (Los Angeles, Calif.) in sabre and freshman Dimitri Kirk-Gordon (San Jose, Calif.) in foil.

The OSU women's epee squad topped the Fighting Irish 5-4, led by a 3-0 record by sophomore Alexandra Obrazcova (Dauganpils, Latvia) and one win each from junior Kaela Brendler (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Leslie Lampman (Gibsonia, Pa.).

OSU's sabre squads led the way for the Buckeyes on the day, as the men's squad of Rogers, Momtselidze, senior Adam Crompton (Newark, N.J.) and junior Jason Paul (Los Angeles, Calif.) went a combined 34-11, while the Buckeye women's sabre team of sophomore Siobhan Byrne (Eislingen, Germany), sophomore Eileen Grench (Davis, Calif.) and junior Syvenna Siebert (Upper Arlington, Ohio) was 31-14.

Top individual records on the men's side included Horanyi at 14-1, Ellis at 13-1, Rivera and Crompton at 12-3 and Rogers at 11-4.

On the women's side, top performances included Grench and Obrazcova at 12-3, Byrne at 11-4 and Brendler at 10-5.

Nice work fencers!

The fencing team has been great the past few years, winning the national championship in '04 and placing 2nd in '05.
