"The Dual" with Michigan is set for this Saturday at the Jesse. Looks like a great event. I like how the University seems to be raising the bar for some quality events in such a beautiful stadium. Go Bucks!

Ohio State roundup: Two win hammer throw

Ohio State's David Ebersole and Veronica Jatsek won the hammer throw at the Big Ten championships yesterday at Champaign, Ill. Ebersole, a senior and former walk-on, earned his first Big Ten title with a distance of 211 feet, 8 inches -- besting the nearest competitor by nearly 4 feet. It was the third-best distance in Ohio State history.
Jatsek won her second straight Big Ten title with a throw of 203-6, topping the field by more than 20 feet. She has three Big Ten titles.

When Veronica Jatsek looks back on her time at Ohio State, she does not just see the Big Ten championships she has won or the multiple All-American honors she has earned in track and field.

The senior also had her brother Lenny by her side through it all.

"Being an All-American and going to the Big Tens with my brother," she said. "And going the places we go, meeting the people we've gotten to meet and making the friendships we've gotten to make with people on the team … I'll never be able to put into words what that's like."

The construction systems management major has been an All-American three times and recently won the Big Ten championship in the hammer throw, beating the rest of the competition by 20 feet with her throw of 203 feet, 6 inches.

When she competes, she said she hears Lenny's voice.

Answer: The trio medaled in Division I at the 2008 state track meet and will compete at Ohio State in the fall.
"I chose OSU because their team is growing quickly and I'll have an opportunity to make an impact," said Jacobs, who won the long jump on just her second attempt (a personal best 19-9?) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, where McKinney finished third (18-7?).

When people look at the 48 points Perkins scored to win the Division II state crown Saturday, the first name which comes to mind is Cory Leslie, a four�?time champion and future Ohio State runner.
There are plenty of reasons to think of Leslie since he won both 800 and 1600 runs to help the Pirates take the title. He even claimed the 800 in the record time of 1 minute, 50.77 seconds.
But what they don?t see is a Ben Kali, who was ranked 10th coming into the finals of the 110 hurdles and fired out of the blocks for a seventh-place finish 15.43 seconds.
?I?m really happy with placing,? Kalis said. ?In the end, it was my goal to place at state and get points for my team.?
They also may not have seen one of the Pirates? biggest fans, 2004 graduate and former Perkins tracks tar Tyson Gentry.

Middie grad earns spot in Olympic Trials

MIDDLETOWN ? When the nation's top track and field athletes compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team, Ohio State's Jeff See will be among them.
And why not? The son of Kevin and Linda See of Middletown has established himself as one of the nation's best distance runners.
Earlier this month, See turned in a 3:40.76 time in the 1,500-meter run at a collegiate meet in Hillsdale, Mich. That performance qualified See for the trials. According to the USA Track & Field Web site, the nation's top 30 runners, most professionals runners, are eligible to compete. See's time places him 24th overall in the country.

In the solitary world of distance running, Rob Myers knows there is supposed to be no friends among competitors, especially in an Olympic year. The former Ohio State track star grew up logging lonely miles along Gun Barrel Road and other rural passages of Fairfield County. He moved to Missouri after college and spent evenings circling a high school track, isolation his most frequent companion.
"Rob's performance was suffering," Ohio State track coach Robert Gary. "He was running himself ragged."
Two years ago, Myers returned to OSU and found an unlikely training partner in Jeff See, an OSU junior he helped recruit, a miler like himself with Olympic aspirations.

Both Ohio State graduate Rob Myers and current Ohio State runner Jeff See qualified for the semifinals in the 1500m yesterday. Rob finished 3rd in his heat with a time of 3:44.81 and Jeff finished 6th in his heat with a time of 3:44.06. The semi-finals are slated for today at 8:05PM Pacific Time (11:05EDT) and both Rob and Jeff will run in the first semi-final. The top 6 from each semi-final will qualify for Sunday's final. They will run against some stiff competition (as expected at the Olympic Trials)... current American record holder Bernard Legat, David Krummenacker, and current American record holder in the 1 mile Alan Webb.

Congrats to both Rob and Jeff and good luck this evening!

EUGENE, Ore. -- Former Ohio State runner Rob Myers qualified for the final in the men's 1,500 meters last night at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, finishing second to race favorite Bernard Lagat in the first semifinal heat. Lagat surged to the front of the pack in the final 100 meters to win in 3 minutes, 43.83 seconds. Myers' time was 3:43.98.
Ohio State's Jeff See took seventh in the same semifinal in 3:44.73 but failed to advance by one spot. The top six in each semifinal qualified for the final.
Other top contenders advancing in the 1,500 were Alan Webb, Leonel Manzano and Lopez Lomong.
In the women's 200-meter preliminaries, Allyson Felix coasted to a victory, leaving her three races from an Olympic spot that pretty much seems preordained.

EUGENE, Ore. ? Jeff See's bid for the 2008 Olympics is over.
The Middletown native finished seventh Friday, July 4, in the first of two heats in the 1,500-meter run at the Olympic Track and Field Trials. The top six finishers in each heat moved on to Sunday finals at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
See, a sophomore at Ohio State University, was in fourth place with about 200 meters to go but faded a bit down the stretch to cross the line in 3 minutes, 44.73 seconds. U.S. record holder Bernard Lagat won the race in 3:43.83.
See's training partner, Rob Myers, was second in 3:43.98, followed by William Leer (3:44.19), Steve Sherer (3:44.20), Alan Webb (3:44.23) and Andrew McClary (3:44.29).

Ridgewood graduate Brian Olinger can almost smell the Olympics.
After Thursday?s qualifying round in the men?s 3,000-meter steeplechase in the United States Track and Field trials in Oregon, Olinger is in today?s finals.
The 25-year old Ohio State University graduate finished sixth Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene in 8:35.89. He grabbed the final at-large berth with his performance and will compete tonight at 5:45 p.m.
The son of Terry and Pam Olinger of Fresno finished sixth in his heat as there were two heats. The top four finishers in each heat advanced automatically to the finals with six at-large spots left. In tonight?s finals, there are three spots for the competitors as they fight to get to Beijing for the summer Olympics.
The top time on Thursday belonged to Anthony Famiglietti as he took the course in 8:25.17.

OSU graduate Brian Olinger finished 7th in today's 300m steeplechase final. He was in second place until the last two laps and didn't have anything left in the tank to go with the leaders.

OSU graduate Joel Brown qualified for the 110m Hurdles semi-finals by placing 4th in his quarterfinal. Of local note Westerville South graduate Ryan Wilson also qualified for the semi-finals by placing 4th in his quarterfinal.

A long-time favorite of mine Allen Johnson pulled up in the middle of his qualifying race with a pulled muscle. It would have been great to see him in the Olympics one last time.
