COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's track and field team competed in the final day of events at the 2007 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Saturday.

Veronica Jatsek turned in Ohio State's top field performance, taking seventh in the hammer throw. She reached a distance of 192 feet, 5 inches. In jumps, Veronica Vance was eighth in the triple jump at better than 41 feet and 17th in the long jump at 18-7 1/4. Her mark in the triple (41-0 1/4) is a regional qualifier.

Friday, Sophomore Ayrizanna Favours ran in the 100-meter dash Friday, timing an 11.92 to place ninth in the prelims. Her time served as a season-best, but missed the finals by one slot but. Later Friday, she and the rest of the women's 4x400-meter relay team of Ashley Jones, Chandra Krempel and Ashley Caldwell took 24th in a season best time of 3:46.87.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team is competing at the Drake Relays this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. Four members of the distance area broke away from the squad to travel to the 2007 Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich., Friday.

Junior John Ealy was the top Buckeye in the 5,000-meter run, pacing a mark of 14:07.72 to take fifth place. He trailed Brian Olinger, a former Ohio State All-American and current volunteer assistant coach, who finished in fourth place in 14:07.39.

Chad Balyo, a freshman miler, extended to the 5,000m event for the first time Friday and clocked 14:39.57 to hold 21st place. He was followed by Alex Bailey and Tom Roof, who placed 30th and 47th, respectively. In addition, Taylor Candella competed in the mile and crossed the finish line in sixth place (4:12.07).

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team competed in the final day of events at the 2007 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Saturday. Four Buckeyes posted qualifying marks for the 2007 NCAA Mideast Regional meet.

For the second week in a row, junior Marios Iacovou was Ohio State's top placer. He cleared 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches to claim runner-up honors in the high jump college and university open event. Also in the jumps, sophomore Brandon Cathcart set a season-best of 50-6 3/4 to place sixth in the triple jump and improve his Mideast standing.

In the throws, Pat Whalen reached 56-8 3/4 for eighth place in the shot put special section. His mark served as a regional qualifier. Earlier in the day, Whalen (163-0) and Lenny Jatsek (161-2) went 15th and 16th in the discus.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Now that spring practice has concluded for the football team, several Buckeyes have turned their attention to the track and will run in the 2007 Jesse Owens Classic Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Classic is in its 22nd running and has been the stage for numerous Olympians such as Roger Kingdom, Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses and Ohio State's own Butch Reynolds.
Last week at the Drake Relays, three Ohio State football players made their track debuts in the 4x100-meter relay. Freshman defensive back Chimdi Chekwa (Chim-dee Cheek-wah), junior All-Big Ten cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and sophomore wide receiver Dan Potokar joined All-Big Ten sprinter Anthony Cole in setting a season-best in the event at 41.57. The unit will look to improve that mark at approximately 4 p.m. Saturday.

This is also a great chance for us as coaches to see some of the high school talent in the state. With the Ohio track and field state championships here, teams love getting out here."

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team closed its regular season Saturday with the 2007 Jesse Owens Classic in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The meet Saturday served as the 22nd running of the Classic and featured high school events in the morning and early afternoon before giving way to college and open competitions.


The distance races closed the day and featured several former Buckeye All-Americans who ran for Reebok Saturday. Rob Myers bested his own meet and stadium record to win the mile in 3:59.43. Myers' mark ranks sixth in the nation this season and topped Jeff See, an Ohio State redshirt in the 2007 outdoor season, and his time of 4:00.80. See's time also broke into the nation's Top 10. Later, Brian Olinger paced 8:36.62 for fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase. Joe Gourley kicked off the distance events with a win in the 800m in a time of 1:51.06. Junior John Ealy used a kick down the stretch to move from fourth to first in the 3,000m with a season-best time of 8:17.64.


The men's 4x100-meter relay team topped the field. Junior Tony Cole combined with three recent additions from the football team - junior Malcolm Jenkins, sophomore Dan Potokar and freshman Chimdi Chekwa - to set a season-best time of 41.37. Matt Comer and Elon Simms joined with senior Gerald Griffin and sophomore Stephen Robinson to win the 4x400m relay in 3:11.79.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's track and field team played host to the 2007 Jesse Owens Classic Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The meet Saturday served as the 22nd running of the Classic and featured high school events in the morning and early afternoon before giving way to college and open action.


In the first open event of the day, Ohio State sophomore Ayrizanna Favours placed second in the 200-meter dash (24.16) and third in the 100m in a season-best time of 11.90. In the 100m, she placed behind two-time Big Ten champion Jenna Harris (11.80), who is taking a redshirt season for the Buckeyes in 2007. Favours also anchored the women's 4x100-meter relay to victory in 47.20. Harris later finished second in the 400m in 53.25. She placed behind former U.S. Olympic medalist Monique Hennagan.


In throw events, Veronica Jatsek started the day by posting a fourth-place heave of 137 feet, 7 inches in the discus. Later, she added a season-best mark of 48-4 1/2 to win the shot put. Jatsek tacked on a runner-up finish in the hammer with a distance of 199-4 Ashley Bowden won the pole vault, clearing 11-6 1/4. She was followed by teammate Kim Willet at 11-0 1/4.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team completed the final events Sunday at the 2007 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Penn State's Nittany Lion Track in State College, Pa. Sophomores Elon Simms and Matt Comer combined to post the Buckeyes' top event with second- and fourth-place times in the 400-meter hurdles. In the team standings, Ohio State was ninth with 52 points. Wisconsin (145.5) outdistanced Minnesota (100.5) for the Big Ten team title.

Simms, who placed third behind runner-up Comer in the 400m hurdles at the 2006 Big Ten meet, clocked a career-best time of 50.79 to land second. Comer crossed the finish line in a season-best 51.64. Both times for sophomores serve as qualifiers for the 2007 NCAA Mideast Regional meet held May 25-26 in Columbia, Mo. The pair also combined to help the 4x400-meter relay team finish fourth in 3:08.86.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's track and field team competed in the third and final day of action at the 2007 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships in State College, Pa. Sophomore sprinter Ayrizanna Favours was the top Buckeye placer with a runner-up mark in the 200-meter dash. She helped Ohio State total 35 team points, which ranked 10th. Michigan and Illinois tied for the team crown with 129-point scores.

Favours, who was an All-Big Ten honoree in the 2007 indoor season, crossed the finish line in 23.71 seconds for her No. 2 finish in the 200m. Later, she anchored the 4x400-meter relay to a sixth-place time of 3:42.55. Favours joined junior thrower Veronica Jatsek as Ohio State's 2007 All-Big Ten honorees. Jatsek won the women's hammer Friday with a conference meet record toss of 208 feet, 2 inches.

With that said, Ohio State should have a lot more than 4 All-Big10 performances. The lack of depth is absolutely killing Ohio State in any scoring meet right now, both men and women. This hasn't been an issue just this year but the past 10-15 years. Some of the MAC schools (Akron, Kent State, Eastern Michigan) would crush Ohio State at this point (and did earlier in the year at All-Ohio). In my opinion, Robert Gary and Karen Dennis need to take the Tressel approach to recruiting: repair relationships with Ohio coaches and schools, sell the in-state talent on coming to Ohio State instead of the MAC and Big10 schools like Penn State and Purdue, then go after some big time out of state talent. I think Robert and Karen can make the programs competitive again... but it will take time.

Funny that they "honored" Rogers at the Jesse Owens. I steered kids away from OSU including Ryan Fitzpatric, who went on to to be an All American, 3 time academic All American, at Purdue. The word was out on Russ for some time as I know other coaches in the Cincinnati area talked about the same thing. Give the facilities (absolutely top drawer) and the new coaches a year or so to turn things around. It also can't hurt to have Butch Reynolds on the football staff.
