The guy may be a "good person" in that he's loyal to friends and loves his family, but he's hardly worthy of real admiration. fourteenandoh says Daly's losing his entire $1 mil WGC purse in one of night of gambling is no big deal. Uh, yeah it is. fourteenandoh also claims that Daly makes up for that in speaking fees, etc. Well, just how long is that going to last...not to mention that the money from speaking is just as vulnerable to his gambling habits as is his other money.

Having a gambling problem is bad. Being an alcoholic is bad. Being both is just a recipe for life-long train wreck.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- John Daly has been cut loose by swing coach Butch Harmon, who said yesterday that he was not going to waste his time with a two-time major champion who is more interested in drinking than working on his golf game.
"My whole goal for him was he's got to show me golf is the most important thing in his life," Harmon said from his golf school in Las Vegas. "And the most important thing in his life is getting drunk."

Why is it a big deal? Because YOU place a high value on money? Why the [censored] does he have to be rich? So long as the guy can pay his bills, then what the [censored] does it matter to anyone else how and where he spends his money. He earned it, and should be allowed to enjoy it any [censored]ing way he chooses.

No one is saying that he has to be rich, but rather that anyone who comes into possession of that much money, which could set himself and his family for life, and then turns around and just [censored]es it all away deserves ridicule. While he himself may have "earned" that money, it does not change the fact to gambling it all away in one night is complete waste. Ever hear of the word "responsibility?" While you may think it's OK for him to literally throw away more money than virtually anyone one of us here will make in a decade, I think it's OK to call it a [censored]ing stupid as it is.

The tour has a policy that anyone missing the pro-am is ineligible to play in the tournament.
Daly, who received a sponsor's exemption, played a Monday pro-am at Bay Hill and said he was asked to play the Wednesday pro-am, too. He requested a morning start, then called Tuesday to find out his tee time. A woman in the tournament office told him 9:47 a.m., which instead was his starting time for the first round.
"I didn't even know that was my Thursday tee time," Daly said. "I should have looked into it. It stinks for me. I want to do anything I can for the tournament as a sponsor exemption. I wanted to meet the people I was playing with in the pro-am. I love Arnold Palmer to death. I called and talked to him and apologized.

Deserves ridicule? If he deserves ridicule for doing what he wants with his money, then you deserve ridicule for not making as much as him and setting a good example for him to follow.

You said that he may be a good person in that he loves/is loved by his family and friends, but he's a dickhead because he blows money. In the grand scheme, money isn't [censored].

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? John Daly woke up Wednesday morning to read that swing coach Butch Harmon fired him. Then he got a phone call when he was at the entrance to Bay Hill letting him know he had been kicked out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational for missing the pro-am.
"Hasn't been a good day," Daly told The Associated Press. "This is the last thing I needed in my life. I feel like I let Arnold down."
The wild ride of golf's most unpredictable figure took another hairpin turn when Daly said he was given wrong information that caused him to miss his tee time, starting a bizarre chain reaction that knocked out two other players from the tournament.
The tour has a policy that anyone missing the pro-am is ineligible to play in the tournament.
Daly, who received a sponsor's exemption, played a Monday pro-am at Bay Hill and said he was asked to play the Wednesday pro-am, too. He requested a morning start, then called Tuesday to find out his tee time. A woman in the tournament office told him 9:47 a.m., which instead was his starting time for the first round.
"I didn't even know that was my Thursday tee time," Daly said. "I should have looked into it. It stinks for me. I want to do anything I can for the tournament as a sponsor exemption. I wanted to meet the people I was playing with in the pro-am. I love Arnold Palmer to death. I called and talked to him and apologized.
