August works out great for MLS, it is a period of downtime in the major US sports leagues, as neither the NHL, NBA, or NFL are in regular season action and the MLB is in its dull period between the All-Star break and the playoff stretch.
I wonder if any US TV networks make a bid to get national broadcast rights for MLS? People will tune in, if only once to see what all the fuss has been about for the past ten years.

That $50 Million figure may of course be misleading.
It will be interesting to see how this deal is structured, and I don't just mean the usual splits between salary and bonus. I mean in terms of who beyond the club ownership is pushing money into the pot. The press is writing this up as if all $50 Million comes out of the Galaxy's hide. I suspect that the designated player rule also allows other outside interests to compensate the player - so this could be, say, $8 per annum from the Galaxy ownership - remainder based on underwriting provided by sponsors on behalf of the Galaxy owners. An exchange of dollars.
Even if the above is so, it remains an over-payment for a player past his prime, no matter the name recognition. Beckham might still be a top 50 player, but this deal makes him the highest paid soccer player in the world - that is simply ridiculous. Guess MLS couldn't entice a truly top-flight player away from Serie A or the Premier League, regardless of the gaudy baubles thrown at his feet.
Maybe one day they will have that muscle, but not today.
