Zetterberg tops NHL's three stars

Detroit Red Wings winger Henrik Zetterberg, Anaheim Ducks winger Teemu Selanne and Colorado Avalanche centre Joe Sakic have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending Feb. 18.
Zetterberg, who tied for the League lead with eight points (four goals, four assists) in three games, earned first star honours as the Red Wings moved into first place in the Central Division and Western Conference. Zetterberg had a hand in all eight Red Wings goals this week, starting with an assist in a 6-1 loss to Philadelphia. In Dallas he scored the game-winning goal and added two assists in a 3-1 victory over the Stars. Zetterberg tallied three goals, including the game-winner, and one assist in a 4-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes to close out the week.
Zetterberg leads the Red Wings in scoring with 64 points (30 goals, 34 assists) in 60 games and ranks second on the club and tied for fifth in the NHL with a plus-minus rating of +25.

I can understand.

Hopefully someone will break the southern stranglehold on the Cup this year. Nashville is a strong contender to keep it there. Nothing against the south, but it's ICE hockey for pete's sake.

Ted Kulfan reports Red Wings GM Ken Holland made a pitch for Peter Forsberg but wasn't willing to sacrifice his club's future on a rental player. Kulfan suggest St. Louis forward Bill Guerin as a potential option for Holland, although the Wings would have competition from rival clubs to land him. "Florida forwards Todd Bertuzzi (out after surgery on his back), Gary Roberts and Jozef Stumpel, Anson Carter of Columbus, Keith Tkachuk of St. Louis and Bryan Smolinski of Chicago are possible options before the Feb. 27 trade deadline", writes Kulfan.

Great Win by the Wings tonight against Chicago.

They didn't have energy in the first period, but Hasek bailed them out.

Then Datsyuk and Zetterberg took over.

BTW word out of the GM meetings is that Florida wants way to much for Bertuzzi or Roberts at this point in time.

i dont know if st louis is going to bail on what they have. it may be interesting. they still have an outside shot of the playoffs. theyve acutally been real strong the last 30 games or so.

that being said trading with in the division is silly...

Yeah it is to a point.

But if the contracts are expiring, that's not as big a deal so long as you don't give up an arm and a leg for a guy (like Nashville did)

It's hard to believe the team that won Cups with Joe Kocur and Darren McCarty could use some muscle, but this is a skill team now and teams can push the Wings around. Brad Norton was an early-season spot enforcer, but the Wings like tough guys who can give them regular shifts. Gary Roberts? Bill Guerin? Owen Nolan? Keith Tkachuk? Martin Lapointe (again)?

GM Ken Holland has more cap room, nearly $5 million, than any other contender, so the Wings are likely to be buyers, especially now that the Predators have landed the huge Forsberg fish. With Dominik Hasek, Chris Chelios, Matt Schneider, Pavel Datsyuk, Kirk Maltby and Robert Lang staring at unrestricted free agency, Holland can be aggressive, knowing he'll have even more room in the off-season.

interesting. Detroit will have a ton of UFAs this off-season.

The need for another left wing who can put the puck in the net is becoming more urgent for the Ducks, who remain trapped in a scoring funk. A source close to the situation said the Ducks are among "eight to 10 teams" interested in either Keith Tkachuk or Bill Guerin. St. Louis is reportedly asking for a young prospect and a first-round pick for either.

Former Red Wings forward Martin Lapointe was in town Wednesday -- as a Blackhawk. There's speculation he could be returning to Detroit for a longer stay.

I really hope Detroit gets Guerin. Lapointe would be ok as an enforcer, but he doesn't score much anymore. I really hope they avoid Tkachuk.

the preds are a struggling franchise, they cant get people to watch. and its a good team.

that being said its a gamble, though i think its one that takes them from a deep playoff team to a team that has a legit cup chance. records, blah blah blah, they didnt have "it" before. foppa brings so much to the table.



ive mentioned the wings ufa issues in the cbj thread and how they were able to roll back salaries as a percentage post lock out and never capitalized on having a club that has a team thats well above the payroll. though those guys are mostly over the hill and on the downside. all of those guys will be over 35 next year. with 13 being the exception, and since i know you dont like him send him down the rd to the nat...

Well I'd take Maltby and Lang back, but Schneider is on the downside and isn't even paired with Lidstrom anymore. He still has a great shot, but Detroit is loaded with young defenseman and he's just holding a kid back at this point.

As for Datsyuk, it really depends on the playoffs. If he disappears again, his price will come down and he'll probably be back in Detroit. If he shows up, Detroit is going to have to pay to keep him.

Jiri Fischer is set to make $1,305,000 this year but it is unlikely that he will play at all due to his heart condition so I have taken him off of the list.
Detroit has also signed D Brad Norton as a depth defenseman but who will likely play most of the season in the AHL. Norton played in the Senators organization last season.
*Steve Yzerman earned bonuses in the 2005-06 but since Detroit had reached the salary cap those bonuses count against the 2006-07 salary cap.
**Dominik Hasek’s contracts contains significant playoff performance bonuses linked to how well he and the Red Wings do in the playoffs.

Holmstrom was just resigned a couple days ago to a 3 year deal....

you can bet that Kronwall will be back next year as well (I think he's restricted anyway)...

Lang is that good 2nd center that every team needs. He's a soft European who never gets physical, but he's got some great skill as well.
