Women?s Hockey: Liana Bonanno Named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.
Junior goaltender recognized for the first time this season
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Junior goaltender
Liana Bonanno of the Ohio State women?s hockey team was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Wednesday. It is the first weekly honor for her this season and third recognition of her career. The Buckeyes have earned five conference player of the week awards this year.
Bonanno limited Minnesota State to just two goals in a sweep of the Mavericks during Ohio State?s final home series of the season, Feb. 15-16 at the OSU Ice Rink. She stopped a combined 41 of 43 shots faced in the two games for a .953 save percentage in 3-2 and 4-0 victories.
The native of Mount Sinai, N.Y., was on her way to recording her third shutout of the season Saturday, stopping all 20 shots faced in her 51 minutes before being replaced by
Jill Mauch on senior day. Bonanno allowed only one power play goal to the Mavericks as she helped the Buckeyes to a 12-of-13 mark (92.3 percent) on the penalty kill.
During her freshman season, Bonanno was twice named WCHA Rookie of the Week. This is her first defensive weekly award.
