Gladstein Invite Results Day 2 (pdf)

COLUMBUS, Ohio
- The Ohio State men's track and field team finished competition at the Harry Gladstein Invitational Saturday.

Senior Anthony Cole took second in the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87. Cole was also the top collegiate athlete in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.73. In the hurdles, freshman Jonathan Francois took fourth with a time of 8.40.

"I was very happy with the team this weekend," Robert Gary, Ohio State head coach said. "I thought David Ebersole who set personal records by almost two feet, Matt Comer, Elon Simms, and Kyle Burns really got some high Big Ten marks for us."

Junior Patrick Whalen took the top spot in the shot put with a toss of 59 feet, 6 1/2 inches. The mark for Whalen is a season-best and currently ranks him third in the Big Ten. Senior Kyle Burns was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault with a leap of 16 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Top 25 ranking and top throws team nationally--the coaches/team couldn't have asked for a better start to the season. Hopefully the momentum will carry right on through into the Spring, and in the process getting depth from some of the football players (Saine, Jenkins and Chekwa--it'd be nice if these two came out again this year).

Tressel and Gary get along much better than Russ.
Even without football, Gary is recruiting and coaching these guys.
The attitude of the team is 100% better - nothing but positives from across the state. Just wish he'd focus on national recruits as well. Can't wait to see signing day for the Buckeyes!

Completely agree, they have a great staff and a very intense training regimen (even more focused than last year), which is already paying off. The attitude comes from the coaches, and the kids have fed off of that. With football I was just referring to the fact that at Big 10s last year the team was hurt by a lack of depth, and more bodies can only help.

I've heard the same rumblings too... Gary is creating much better relationships with Ohio high school AND Ohio State coaches. I'm excited to see the working relationship he and Tressel are starting to form... it will only help both programs in the long run.

Lack of depth has hurt OSU for a number of years now. When looking at the team aspect of track it is all about getting bodies that can compete in every event... in the past OSU hasn't even entered athletes in events because they don't have enough to go around. Gary is definitely bringing a welcome change to the program and hopefully he continues to build on the success he is having.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team completed action at the Rob McCravy Invitational Saturday inside of Nutter Field House on the campus of the University of Kentucky.

Senior Anthony Cole raced his way to a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash in a season-best time of 21.45. Against a tough field of competitors, Cole also took sixth in the 60-meter dash in a time of 6.77.

"As we head into our invitational part of the season, it?s exciting to see great performances," Robert Gary, Ohio State head coach, said. "We definitely have the opportunity to set ourselves up to qualify for NCAA championships. Matt Comer just missed an NCAA mark and Tony (Anthony) Cole had an extremely solid double in the 60 and 200. Elon Simms and Dan White had a good double with Elon coming back on our 4 x 400. Pat Whalen also had a great competition today with his last throw being his furthest."

They have a landed a great recruiting class with a couple Ohioians also in the top 5 in the country leading the way. Add in this stud thrower from Georgia and they have the cornerstones to actually build something. It's going to be tough on Gary though; I listened to him speak at the clinic and I was pretty fired up. He seems extremely passionaite and energized for OSU track. It's nice to see he is working towards a balanced team because I am sure it'd be easier to throw a ton of money into the distance area. However, Rodgers burned so many bridges throughout the state that it's going to take a long time to recover from. Football could be a help, but it's hard to think you'll get more than a couple at a time for many reasons.

Updates: Unfortunately the thrower from GA changed his mind and is going to Auburn now, and Hartline joined the team for the indoor and outdoor hurdles this year.
