Pens trade Whitney to Ducks for Kunitz, Tangradi

The Pittsburgh Penguins have cleared up a bit of their log jam along the blue line as they have sent Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks for Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi.
The 26-year old Whitney was a vital piece of the Penguins Stanley Cup run last year; however foot surgery caused him to miss the first 31 games of the season.
The Boston-native is one of the better puck moving defencemen in the league and should be a big boost to the ? power play. He became deemed surplus goods when fellow defenceman and Penguins' primary powerplay quarterback Sergei Gonchar returned a shoulder injury.
Whitney is in the second year of a six-year contract he signed with the Penguins last season. He was chosen fifth overall by the Penguins in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Seeking scoring help on the wing, the Pittsburgh Penguins dipped into their reservoir of puck-moving defencemen and shipped one to the Ducks.
Numbers Game examines the trade and the junior star who may make the difference.
The Penguins Get: LW Chris Kunitz and RW Eric Tangradi.
Kunitz, 29, has been a solid, if not spectacular scoring winger for the Ducks over the past four seasons, topping out at 25 goals, 60 points and a plus-23 rating in 2006-2007.
This season, Kunitz has 16 goals, 19 assists and a plus-9 rating and he leads the Ducks with 148 hits. His hard-driving style does tend to make him a good complementary part of a line with more skilled players.
In Pittsburgh, that opportunity should present itself with Sidney Crosby, an opportunity that should improve Kunitz's production significantly over the final 20 games of the season.

I like this trade, gives the Pens a top 6 forward that they have needed. Plus it gets rid of Whitney who's Defense has been terrible over the last month or so. If Tangradi turns into a good power forward. Good trade for Pittsburgh, and it doesn't hurt their Salary cap #s either.

They certainly can use that. They play ssssoooooo soft. A step in the right direction. Whitney's a nice guy but I can't say I'll miss his soft game.

i think his uncle is keeping that stat. he isnt ultra rugged. he is tougher nosed (burke player). hell fit nice on a wing in pitt.
tangardi is a nice pickup. he has played very well in bellville this year.

cap wise its pretty much a dead swap.

Awesome trade. I am extremely happy. Got a quality prospect in Tangardi. Got a top-6 winger in Kunitz. And, honestly, Whitney can be replaced with either Goli or Letang.

Also extremely pleased with the trade. I knew Whitney had to go and i'm glad we aquired someone like we have. Nice hitter and a player who goes to the net hard. Sort of like Malone but a bit more mobile and can also kill Penalties I believe as well.

Now I'm just waiting to get rid of Staal and Hal Gill. If that happens and we can get a nice return then I will be a happy pens fan!

One side of me though wants to see how Staal pans out because afterall he's only 20.

might as well call Chicago's 4th goal a PP as well. 3 seconds after the penalty ended.

I'll be shocked if Pitt wins this game now. 2 goal lead to start the 3rd and outshot 19-4 with about 2 to play. Sad.
