2009 Ohio Hockey Classic

Ohio State enters the Ohio Hockey Classic on a six-game winning streak and has won nine of its last 10 games. The team has won seven-consecutive games in Value City Arena and is 7-1-1 at home this year. It is the longest winning streak since winning six in a row Jan. 28-Feb. 12, 2005.

The buckeyes take on Army tonight, then most likely Fredo of Ohio tomorrow night. Buckeyes and Fredo of Ohio should handle Army/Clarkson pretty easily tonight to setup a 3rd match of the year saturday.

We need to get plenty of shots, be better on our power plays, and get solid play from Carlson. The buckeyes have been hot for the first half of the season, and winning their own tourney could set the tone for the second half and a great season over-all.

I will be there both nights cheering on our buckeyes which will most likely have a crowd dominated by Fredo of Ohio fans. If you need something to do please come cheer our boys on because the crowd will be a major factor.

WHY IT MATTERS

The Fredo of Ohio Redhawks exceeded the expectations of most observers in the first half of the season, riding stellar freshmen goaltenders Cody Reichard and Connor Knapp to a 12-3-3 record, but are disappointed to have lost the CCHA?s top spot to Notre Dame on the strength of the Fighting Irish?s extra shootout win. The difference thus far? An Ohio State shootout win on the opening night of CCHA play. Look for the Buckeyes to come out strong, wanting to defend their home ice and jump-start their second half. Both Army and Clarkson have struggled severely in the first half, and will be looking to save face.

WHO TO WATCH

This tournament appears to boil down to the Buckeyes and Redhawks, and, mainly, their respective forwards and goaltenders. A lot will be riding on whether Dustin Carlson can continue to be the answer for Ohio State?s previous goaltending woes, and whether Knapp and Reichard can carry their team on an offensive off-night. Up front, focus on Carter Camper and Justin Mercier for Fredo of Ohio, and Ohio State?s Zac Dalpe, Peter Boyd, and Corey Elkins. On the back end, Fredo of Ohio's Kevin Roeder is the premier defenseman in the tournament, and freshman blueliner Chris Wideman has been a great contributor as well, compiling 15 assists.

Clarkson, which is in the midst of an 11-game winless streak, has been beset by injuries this season. One encouraging note has been the play of the team?s top scorers, sophomore forwards Scott Freeman, Lauri Tuohimaa, and Brandon DeFazio, all of whom have nearly eclipsed their freshman point totals. Army, meanwhile, has lost seven of its last eight. Senior goaltender Josh Kassel, an All-American in 2007-08, has struggled mightily, posting a 2-7-0 record, a 4.11 goals against average, and an .862 save percentage.

HOW WE SEE IT

Both Fredo of Ohio and Ohio State should walk through the first round of the tournament, particularly with Fredo of Ohio's skill and Ohio State?s home-ice advantage. Look for another close match-up in the championship game, with Fredo of Ohio's offensive relentlessness overcoming a strong performance from Carlson, and the Redhawks gaining some confidence as they maneuver to overcome Notre Dame in the CCHA standings.

Call them what you will...they have a hell of a hockey team. I still find it interesting that they are ranked #2 in the country behind #1 Notre Dame, when they've already played the Domers twice in South Bend, and Miami won both of those games. Both have 3 losses. But, as we have seen with Texas and Oklahoma...if two teams have teh same record, and played head to head...then the one who lost the head to head matchup is the better team.

Clarkson is one of the worst teams in NCAA divison 1 hockey...and they beat #2 Miami tonight. I have no clue what happened there, but talk about a MAJOR upset. Miami had 42 shots on goal and Clarkson had only 19. Yet Clarkson won 4-2. Great goalkeeping by Clarkson obviously, but not by Miami at all with Cody Reichard in goal.

Ohio State beat Army 6-1...easy win as expected.

So it's Clarkson vs. Ohio State tomorrow, and Miami vs. Army in the losers game.

I about [censored] when I got to the Schott and Fredo of Ohio was down 1-2. I then got to watch them go down 1-4, and lose 2-4. Was a great thing to hear their crowd quiet and watch them leave with their heads down.

The Buckeyes pretty much had their way with Army and scored 3 goals in something like the first 8 min's. The second period was pretty quiet until about the last 3 min's then the buckeyes started turning it back on again.

They really controlled the puck well which made it fun to watch. The final was 6-1 but could have easily been a lot more.

Want to give major props to Hunter Bishop. He played with a motor that didn't quit the whole game. Was after the puck, and hitting hard non-stop.

Clarkson Downs No. 2-ranked Miami in First Round of Ohio Hockey Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Clarkson snapped No. 2-ranked Miami?s eight-game winning streak with a 4-2 win Friday night in the first round of play of the fifth-annual Ohio Hockey Classic in Value City Arena. The RedHawks (12-4-3; 10-2-2-1 CCHA) outshot the Golden Knights (3-10-4; 1-6-1), 42-19, for the game, but Clarkson?s power-play squad produced two goals and CU goalie Paul Karpowich had 40 saves to secure the win. The Golden Knights were victorious in their last meeting with the RedHawks, a 4-2 win in Potsdam Nov. 25, 2006.

Clarkson advances to the Ohio Hockey Classic final, set for 5:05 or 8:05 p.m. Saturday in VCA. The RedHawks, the tournament?s defending champion, will play in the consolation game.

Buckeyes Win Ohio Hockey Classic Opener, Downing Army 6-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Buckeye senior Corey Elkins had a team-best three points and three others had two points each as the Ohio State men?s hockey team opened the Ohio Hockey Classic with a 6-1 victory over Army Friday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes advance to the championship game for the fourth-consecutive year and will take on Clarkson, who downed No. 2-ranked Miami in the early game, 4-2. Ohio State, which has won its last seven games and 10 of the last 11, will take on the Golden Knights at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in VCA, preceded by the consolation game between the RedHawks and Black Knights at 5:05 p.m.

Elkins had a goal and two assists for his second three-point game in the last three outings. Buckeye sophomore John Albert and freshman Ian Boots each had a goal and an assist, while sophomores C.J. Severyn and Shane Sims each had two assists. In all, 10 Buckeyes had a point in the game. The Buckeyes (12-6-1/6-5-1-1 CCHA) have scored more than six goals in three of their last four games.

Army Wins Ohio Hockey Classic Consolation Game Over Miami, 3-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Army won the consolation game of the fifth-annual Ohio Hockey Classic Saturday night in Value City Arena, defeating No. 2-ranked Miami, 3-2. Black Knight goaltender Jay Clark made 56 saves, an OHC single game record, and Cody Omilusik and Eric Sefchik added a pair of shorthanded goals to edge the RedHawks who dropped a 4-2 decision to Clarkson Friday. Army now is 5-12-1 on the year. Miami drops to 12-5-3.

Buckeyes Claim Ohio Hockey Classic Championship with 2-0 Victory over Clarkson

OLUMBUS, Ohio ? Buckeye sophomore Hunter Bishop?s first goal early in the first period stood as the gamewinner as the Ohio State men?s hockey team downed Clarkson, 2-0, Saturday in Value City Arena in the championship game of the Ohio Hockey Classic. Ohio State sophomore goalie Dustin Carlson stopped all 24 shots he faced saves in his fourth shutout of the season, as the Buckeyes, now 13-6-1 on the year, extended their winning streak to eight.

The tournament title is the second for the Buckeyes and the first since 2006. Buckeye senior forward Corey Elkins was voted the tournament?s MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Carlson, Bishop and defenseman Shane Sims, along with Army?s Cody Omilusik and Clarkson?s Bryan Rufenach.

Army Wins Ohio Hockey Classic Consolation Game Over Miami, 3-2

This one's smart...not dumb like everyone says.

I was there, and the tosu fans were cheering for Army and acting like they beat Miami on a daily basis on the ice. Personally, I have no problem losing to the real men of Army, who'll one day defend our country. But I have problems with tosu f&* who think it's their right to show up the world in their "so called" superiority as the biggest school in the world when they're nothing but a bunch of inferrior asshats (although comparing tosu to asshats is an inslut to asshats everywhere).

The Miami fans present did get some "back-at-cha" to the tosu conglomerate present, when Miami scored their second goal, the fans holding up their fingers with two did the "Hook 'em Horns" sign from Texas. Knowing that Texas will beat their buckeye asses into oblivion on Monday night is the one true solace I can hold throughout this bad weekend of hockey.

Memo to Fredo: When accusing others of being inferior, it's best to know how to spell the [censored]ing word.

I guess something must have happened to Fredo. ORD must be very happy
