After already having traded away half the core of a Stanley Cup championship team in the past 11 months, the Lightning might be on the verge of the unthinkable - trading iconic superstar Vinny Lecavalier.

There are other reports that suggest talks with Montreal already have reached the point of an agreed-upon deal that features a package that includes forwards Chris Higgins and Tomas Plekanec and defensive prospect P.K. Subban, along with multiple first-round picks. French Canadian station RDS reported that four other teams are believed to have held discussions with Tampa Bay.

a deal that could include a solid second line centre (plekanec) a top six caliber winger (higgins) prospects like subban and multiple picks (more than one first rounder). who knows but this will be the first movement of a "lifetime contract" player.

thats the most common analogy in hockey, well besides about euros with visors...

but this could be a HUGE deal. imagine a 28 year old qb in the nfl who had won a title being traded to a good team in a huge market (say the cowboys?). i dunno who the qb would be, big ben? something that big.

Wow! Lafleur isn't in the top 12 forwards?!? He's the franchise's all-time leading scorer! That's like leaving Lemieux off the Penguins list. I appreciate the effort to reflect the roles of the different lines (especially the inclusion of Gainey and Carbonneau on the checking line), but Brian Skrudland? He didn't even play 8 full seasons for the Habs. If you're looking to include character players, what about Henri Richard? 11 Stanley Cups in 20 seasons, 'nuff said.

Agree. Hard to believe that they left LaFleur off the entire team and even the "Pocket Rocket". It's funny I remember watching those teams in the mid-late 50s and while I remember Maurice and Jean very well, Dickie Moore does not stick in my mind. The name does but I just can remember seeing him play. They might televise one game per week back then. Plante, I can remember initially played without a mask but they all did back then. I would always be the Canadians and my brother would play an all NHL team against them in our little hockey game

McKenzie: Lecavalier trade talk has cooled down...for now

If the Vinny Lecavalier trade pot was boiling a couple of weeks ago, and it most certainly was with Montreal and Edmonton making serious offers, then these days it is just on low simmer, even on the occasion of les Canadiens being in Tampa to play the Lightning.
The Lightning have been playing much better of late and Lecavalier has been playing his best hockey of the season. There has also been a fairly strong negative reaction amongst Lightning fans and corporate sponsors to that Lecavalier trade talk, and that has chilled things quite a bit - keeping in mind that Tampa ownership had never fully committed to trading big No. 4 in the first place, in part because there wasn't unanimity of opinion within the organization.
But now, as it was when the pot was boiling, the trading of Lecavalier remains an option that will be considered. To what extent it will be considered will be based on many factors that include: how the team is playing, how Lecavalier is playing, what the offers are from other teams, and in what direction ownership decides to take this franchise in the long run. All of those will get weighed and measured on a weekly basis between now and the trade deadline.
If it makes sense to trade Vinny, they will. If it doesn't, they won't.
And even if Lecavalier doesn't move by the deadline, his no-movement clause doesn't kick in until July 1st, so it's reasonable to expect another flurry of Lecavalier trade talk and rumours at the NHL Entry Draft in June.
Oh yeah, did we mention the draft is in Montreal this year?

Gainey asks Kovalev to stay home - Sportsnet.ca

Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey asked veteran Alexei Kovalev to stay home and think about things while the team embarks on a two-game road trip.

The veteran is not hurt; but Gainey feels that Kovalev cannot help the team the way he is playing right now. The 35-year-old was held pointless in the two games against Colorado and Vancouver on the weekend. In 57 games he has 13 goals and 26 assists.

Gainey has not ruled out the possibility of a trade at before the March 4 deadline. The team will remain in contact with Kovalev over the next 48 hours and it appears his fate with the organization may be decided by the next home game, Saturday afternoon against Ottawa.

The Kovalev news comes on the heels of a Monday trade for veteran leadership in Mathieu Schneider. Gainey indicated on Tuesday that the Canadiens had been pursuing the Thrashers' defenceman since November but the Vincent Lecavalier rumours got in the way of an earlier move. Gainey added that the Canadiens never contacted Tampa Bay about Lecavalier but rather it was the ownership group and Bolts GM Brian Lawton who contacted Montreal and laid the framework for a trade, asking specifically for Chris Higgins, Tomas Plekanec, Josh Gorges and draft picks.

Lawton stated on several occasions that he never contacted other teams about Lecavalier and that the rumours were completely fabricated.

The Canadiens will pay the next two games on the road in Washington and Pittsburgh.

Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced that forward Sergei Kos[censored]yn has been assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League while forward Greg Stewart has been recalled to Montreal from Hamilton.

Kos[censored]yn, 21, has played in 52 games with the Canadiens this season accumulating 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) along with 64 penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 190-pound right wing played in 52 regular season games for Montreal last season earning 27 points (nine goals, 18 assists) and 51 penalty minutes and also played in 22 games with the Bulldogs in 2007-2008, recording 22 points (six goals, 16 assists) and 18 penalty minutes. The native of Novopolotsk, Belarus also competed in 12 post-season games with the Canadiens last year registering eight points (three goals, five assists) and 14 penalty minutes. Kos[censored]yn was drafted by Montreal in the 7th round, 200th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Three seriously injured as bus carrying AHL team crashes

BECKET, Mass. - Three people were seriously injured when a bus carrying the AHL's Albany River Rats rolled on its side on Interstate 90 in western Massachusetts early Thursday, state police said.
The bus was on its way home from a game in Lowell when it struck a guard rail and rolled on its side in Becket at about 3:35 a.m., Sgt. David Mahan said.
Three people were taken to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield with what he called "serious" injuries. He did not release names. It was unclear whether those injured were players, coaches or management.
Twenty-nine others on the bus were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Coach Jeff Daniels of Oshawa, Ont., told the Times Union of Albany that four people were admitted to the hospital and the injuries do not appear to be life threatening. He described them as lacerations.
The names of the injured would not be made public until their families were notified, Daniels said.
"We were very fortunate and lucky," he said.
According to the AHL website, there are 16 Canadian players on the River Rats roster. Assistant coach Geordie Kinnear was born in Simcoe, Ont

Report: Alleged criminal linked to members of Canadiens

As many problems as the Canadiens have had on the ice lately, they potentially have a greater one off the ice.
A suspect arrested last week in a police operation targeting organized crime is an acquaintance of Montreal Canadiens players Andrei and Sergei Kos[censored]yn and Roman Hamrlik, according to a report in Friday's La Presse.
The police reportedly recorded conversations between the arrested man, Pasquale Mangiola, and at least two of the players. La Presse adds that the three Canadiens stars are not suspected of any criminal activity.
Pasquale was arrested on charges of drug trafficking last Thursday as part of an operation called ‘Project Axe.'
The news is the latest distraction for a team that finished 1-4-1 on a crucial road trip and is in danger of missing the playoffs.

Rick Tocchet, an assistant coach with Phoenix at the time, was running a gambling ring a couple years ago, but as I recall, it was never linked to the fixing of hockey games.
