The NHL and Coyotes are saying they are confident that the Coyotes will remain in Glendale, AZ. I on the other hand, don't believe it. If they do leave, the city of Glendale is going to have an empty arena that is only about 5 years old.

I think that if the Coyotes move that it should be mandated by the league that they move back to Winnipeg.

id heard i think last week in discussion that the league was taking over the club, that was then denied by the club. then they jam the thing into b court? why would you do that, get rid of your old/bad contracts...

makes me wonder.

the issue of "southern" markets are interesting but the reality is to expand the sport you need new cities. the impact has been huge and is big issue among the "candian elite" looking back to 2002 the league was 56% canadian and 14% us players. this years numbers are 52% and 22%, what happened? more american markets have been added in the past 25 years, meaning more americans playing hockey, more us hockey players, more nhl players from these areas resulted. imo this means more players, better talent, better for the game. the expansion of the game in NA and the world are important and should be important parts of the game, this is why to some extent i like revenue sharing. that being said you need franchises that have economic sustainability potential.

ill point to the pitt area, how many 20somes do you see in the league from pitt now? lots, why mario, jagr etc...


hamilton-it essentially makes them maple leafs lite. the city is about 500k and 700k in the metro, granted this doesnt include parts of toronto metro cities and areas (brampton, oakville, kitchener, guelph, etc). reality is high dollar jackets tickets are nosebleed prices in the acc. normal folks cant get tickets or go to games. hamilton has the coops coliseum built in the mid 80s that seats 17.5k.

as far as where i think? i dont know. but this like the nashville deal reeks of tampering and pushing. make no mistake im no fan of basillie. for those not big hockey fans he is the mega mark cuban type.

Why is it better? There aren't enough Canadians to keep the NHL afloat. They need more popularity in America. Obviously, Phoenix wasn't an ideal location, but from my limited knowledge of the NHL, I didn't think the Whalers left Hartford because the fans were so awesome. I also don't give two piles of wolverine [censored] about hockey, but Phoenix used to support the Coyotes when they were half way decent and played their games in Phoenix.

For those of you who don't know, the Coyotes got their new stadium approved in Scottsdale and decided to build their stadium in GLENDALE!!! The difference between Scottsdale and Glendale is like night and day. Scottsdale is nice with more people with higher incomes. Their new stadium in Glendale was in the middle of nowhere. It was by itself in the middle of a bunch of [censored]ing farmland. No one from the East valley is going to drive way the [censored] to the West valley (Glendale) to go to a game during the weekdays. Maybe on the weekends, but not during the weekdays. The West side of town doesn't have enough people with money to support the franchise. The Coyotes [censored]ed themselves in more than one way.

Now the AZ Cardinals stadium is right next to the Coyotes stadium and there are a bunch of places to drink and eat around there, but it's still not good enough for the East siders to make the trip for a crappy hockey team.

lets be honest the fact that they played at the hartford civic center (a mall) didnt help the situation... (of note columbus almost had the hartford franchise-now carolina hurricanes except the arena was voted down by the people)

Yeah, I was actually asking. I just assumed that a "beloved" franchise wouldn't up and move. If they were making money anyway. A small arena would explain the "making money" thing. Why didn't they build a bigger arena? If the fans voted it down, I have little sympathy for them.

no columbus voted down the arena (at the ohio fairgrounds i think?) for an arena for the whalers franchise.

Yeah, I understand that. I'm wondering why people seem to think Hartford should get the "yotes", when they weren't able to keep the team they had.
