I'll wait a little while before creating the Men's thread.

ESPN was showing 3 live hours of tennis this morning. Then the coverage switched to NBC, which is showing it live in the Eastern Time Zone, and delayed to the rest of the country. Which has sucked for years, but that's another topic.
NBC is now showing the Venus-Ivanovic match on a delayed basis (yes, even in the Eastern US, when there's live tennis to be shown), and ESPN was not allowed to show the Venus match during their morning coverage, since NBC had exclusive rights to the match. But ESPN's Chris Fowler said, (paraphrasing) "We can't show you the Venus match whle she's on the court, but if you want to know what happened just check online for live scores. But we are allowed to show you her post-match press conference." And then they switched to Venus talking live about how she advanced because Ivanovic retired with an injury. All just to discourage viewership on NBC. I don't really give a [censored] who shows the tennis - I just want it all to be live. At Noon Central time I'll have the choice between watching 1-hour old coverage of NBC, and live coverage on ESPN. |

It is bizarre, and magnified on the left coast even more. Of course, now I don't care so much after Sharapova imploded, as she is pretty much the only charisma on the women's tour in recent years. The women do have tons better legs, which explains why I largely ignore men's yawns, especially the five setters, but in any case I hope Maria gets back up to form later this summer.

Another perfect example of why women's tennis is all about who chokes less.

Mixed in with three or four unforced errors a game and a double fault. Dementieva should have won that match twice. It was getting tough to watch at the end, especially with Mary Jo (who is terrible) and Cliff claiming they were playing unbelievable tennis.

Venus is demonstrating grass dominance.
"Safina has won 17 points and this is the 11th game." |
