At this point and time, San Jose can't fill out their roster. They don't have the cap room. They need at least 3 more forwards and a backup goalie just to get close.

I'd imagine that Cheechoo would be intriguing to some teams. He shouldn't be worth too much at this point. I don't get to watch the Sharks much, but I hear he's a shell of his former self. Still, if he gets half the skill back that he had when he was scoring with the best in the league, he'd be a nice asset for many teams.

Also curious what the Flyers are going to do. I don't know their cap situation exactly, but I'm pretty sure they need to dump a contract somehow. I think Briere has a NMC and he'd probably be the dude they want to get rid of.

Basically this is it:

Chicago gives up Versteeg, Campbell, most likely a first round pick and Huet for Marleau, Kaberle and Nabakov.

San Jose gives up Marleau, Nabakov and Cheechoo for Blake, Huet, and a pick (Chicago's?)

Toronto gives up Blake and Kaberle for Versteeg, Campbell and Cheechoo.

San Jose can't be that desperate. It looks like a Chicago fan's dream of a trade.

That is a Chicago fan wet-dream.

That's not how Brian Burke (Toronto's GM) builds teams. He doesn't start out with high-priced veterans as his core and that's certainly what that trade would bring to Toronto.

San Jose isn't going to give up on Nabby (they don't have much behind him) and their minor league system sucks.

And Chicago isn't exactly in the position to be wheeling and dealing anyway since they will have that RFA qualifying offer screw up hanging over them.

As for Chicago not being willing to wheel and deal because of Fail Tallon's blunder, that might be backward logic.

They've been dying to free up cap room, and if they can't bring some of these guys that were valuable to the Hawks back for cheap last year, they're going to have to get more inventive to fill out their roster.

But you're right about Burke... no way in hell.

Burke just signed Beauchemin (sp) to a 3 year 11.4MM contract, paving the way for a TK trade. Any Leafs fans know when Burke is going to get some offense ?

BTW this wetdream that some Blackhawk fan had would put Chicago so far over the cap they would never be able to fill out their roster (they'd still be 2 or 3 players short)....

Not happening.

BTW the NHLPA filed a grievance - it appears that Versteeg may be the odd man out since Barker resigned already (and cost himself a ton of $$$ on the open market IMO)

Question for you, jo. How does a franchise's farm system affect the roster/salary cap situations? Are minor leaguers considered under contract by their local team, and if called up, only then would their contract count against the NHL cap? I'm assuming it would have to be bumped up to the NHL minimum, at that point. Mainly wondering if an NHL team facing serious cap issues could call up a couple players as "place holders" until some personnel changes could be worked out.
