OSU Rugby - Midwest Championships This Weekend

For the first time in almost a decade, the OSURFC will not be hosting the Midwest Rugby Union Division 1 College Championship. Having lost our beloved title to Purdue last year, we will be travelling to West Lafayette to face Indiana on Saturday and the winner of Purdue/Minnesota on Sunday. We are heavily favored to bring the title back where it belongs. See below for the game information. Anyone in the area is welcome to attend, as is anyone not in the area wishing to send good vibes. We also will be submitting our application as the official atheltic team of the Paint Chip Party later this year...

Rugby: Make sure you personally [censored] someone up on the Wisconsin team...

Sadly, schools like Wisconsin, scUM, and a few other Big 10 schools are not even considered D1 rugby programs. We had to drop scUM from our annual schedule because the local hospitals couldn't hold that many Wolverines.

A recent proposal calls for the formation of a east coast/midwest "super league", for lack of a better expression. Five teams...the main four would be Army, Navy, Penn State, and your beloved Buckeyes. The fifth spot is up for debate. There are teams that come and go as powerhouses (UConn, Harvard, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Purdue, Boston College), but most usually fade after their "foriegn students" pack up and head home.

Tonight was a spirited, if not freezing-assed cold and rainy, final practice in preperation for this weekend. A small scuffle broke out during our team session (read: controlled scrimmage), which means that the fellas are ready to smash somebody not wearing scarlet and grey. Bus departs from the VC at 5:00 PM tomorrow...

One final bump before heading out to Purdue:

I have gotten several PMs and emails from BP supporters and alumni alike and I wanted to thank everyone for their support. Also, thanks to all the people who make this site run for allowing me to try and spread the word about one of OSU's hardest working teams. These guys deserve to be noticed. They work harder, train harder, and play harder than some varsity teams and they do it all without the enormous financial support those varsity teams receive (although not for long, Geiger-willing). We will be staying away from the hotels where the other teams will be staying as we are trying to get our guys somehwat isolated from the hoopla while trying to ensure they are mentally ready to go tomorrow. If we stay focused and play our game this weekend, not only will we be bringing the hardware home, but we will officially be introducing the other clubs to OSU's version of the house of pain. I only hope OSU's other football team fares as well as we plan to. Thanks again to everyone and GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finny was a trooper this weekend. After being rescued from Michigan State last weekend, he made his first visit to an OSU rugby event in over a year. And despite missing a leg, he hung tough all weekend with the help of some tape, a piece of wood, and the ingenuity of some C-side guys. We passed the hat on the trip back in order to provide Finnigan with a new lightweight, aerodynamic, prosthetic leg, although that might be tough since he's made of cement.

The wrap-ups of Sunday's final should be up sometime this morning, as long as the guys didn't spend too much time at the bars last night measuring how much "frosty goodness" the Midwest Cup could hold. Minnesota won the 3rd place game and celebrated like it was 1999, although that win earns them a 1st round unmerciful thrashing from defending national champions Cal-Berkeley.

Forgive my Diet Coke-induced amnesia, but where are the nationals this spring, wadc?

Our bracket heads to Berkeley. If memory serves me correctly, we would face the Pacific #3 in the 1st round. Last year's Pac #3 was BYU. Then we would face the winner of Penn State and Air Force. If we were to win that game, I believe that is when we would face Goliath on their home turf. Our goal right now is getting another shot at Cal in the Final Four.

We head to Annapolis, banged up and bruised, to play a friendly against #3 Navy this weekend. It is a good chance for some of the younger guys to see what major D1 rugby is all about.

Midwest Ends in Drama, OSU Victory

November 8, 2004 – The Midwest RFU men's DI college championship ended with an Ohio State victory over a still improving Purdue side, and plenty of concern over an injured player.

In the semifinals on Saturday Purdue overcame Minnesota, while Ohio State defeated Indiana convincingly 53-5.

In that game, Ohio State exerted consistent defensive pressure, let by flanker Joe Wittenberg and center Phil Nightingale, but in some ways left chances go by as they kept dropping the ball at critical moments.

The game was also marred by a serious injury to Indiana's captain and flyhalf Reed Bailey, who emerged from a ruck complaining of neck pain. Quick action by the on-field trainer sent Bailey to the local hospital, where he was diagnosed with a C-6 fracture and was transported to Indianapolis Medical Center, where he was immobilized in a halo pending further examination.

Observers say it all could have been worse had there not been medical staff at the field at Purdue.

And it was understandable that the IU Mudsharks would be down for their 3rd place game against Minnesota, despite the fact that a national playoff berth awaited the victors.

Still it ended up being a hugely dramatic game, as UM ran out to a quick lead with three tries and a 19-0 advantage. Indiana scored and Minnesota answered to make it 24-5 at the half.

But IU wasn't done and with 20 minutes to go they opened up their play just as they had done in their comeback against Bowling Green. Unleashing an attractive, multi-phase, 15-man attack that netted two quick tries. Minnesota score a crucial insurance try to make it 29-19 and Indiana came right back, touching down in the corner. A brilliant conversion put IU with three at 29-26.

Drama continued as Indiana ran from a midfield penalty. But a handling error and kick to touch ended it all, and IU went home with honor, but heartbreak, while Minnesota will have the pleasure of facing Cal in the national playoffs opening round.



The Midwest final was a collision of blunt objects, with the Boilermakers using their lock David Newlin and eightman Kevin Peterson to thunder through the stout OSU defense.

After eight minutes Purdue took a lineout inside the OSU 22. They mauled the lineout and were stopped, however, Ohio State was offside, and Purdue did it again. This time they made it over the line. 7-0 Purdue.

Ohio State regained momentum off the restart and a massive tackle from former USA U19 flanker Bubba Bleakmore freed the ball for some slick work from the backs saw fullback Dane Robinson cutting back to score. 7-7.

"We felt if we could neutralize Kevin Peterson as well as Dave Newlin on defense and get their forwards to commit to rucks and tackles with the ball in our hands, then we would put our backs in good situations in the open field," said OSU captain Conor Malloy

Purdue kicked a penalty goal to take the lead, but under defensive pressure were unable to clear effectively, allowing the OSU backs to counter and create a try for wing Doug Olson. 14-10 OSU.

It was more defense for much of the rest of the game, and both sides worked to shorten the field by kicking for territory. But kicking away possession can be a dangerous game to play if you're not precise, and an ill-advised kick undid Purdue – OSU took a quick lineout to flyhalf Tondarai Kambarami just outside the OSU 22. Kambarami dummied and sidestepped his way to the corner and a 19-10 Ohio State lead.

In the second half both sides worked on their defense, and often overstepped the bounds of legality in doing so. Both sides had a player sin-binned for repeated violations. Ohio State made the Purdue yellow card matter. Scoring a penalty goal and a try, they extended their lead to 27-10. With ten minutes to go Purdue rebounded, working the centers and forwards well to pressure OSU and eventually score on a quick-tap penalty. But it wasn't enough, and OSU takes the top Midwest seed 27-15.

"I give credit to Purdue," said OSU coach Tom Rooney. "And I think now that they have seen the Nationals once, they will be a strong team for someone to have to go against."

Dane Robinson earned Ohio State's Man of the Match award.

This was one you had to see to believe. Kambas made one guy miss after the quick lineout, and was off to the races. His sidestep is devastating. He can tell you it's coming and he'll still make defenders look foolish. He took the ball over 70 meters almost untouched. I think this try took a lot of the wind out of Purdue's sails.
