What about Roman Polanski's role in dragging this out for 30 years? If he did his time instead of fleeing, there is never any opportunity for the courts to reopen this.

Let's take a case with the exact same facts, except that the perp is a middle school gymnastic teacher coincidentally named "Roman Polansky" (sp) and who happens to run off to France after pleading guilty.

Does anyone at that point even debate the issue?

According to the grand jury testimony, she and a friend were going to be picked up for the photo shoot, but Polanski told the friend that she could not come with them on the shoot. The 13 year old trusted the famous director and went with him. Nobody but Polanski and his hard on were at the home when he forced her to have sex with him.

Philosophically, I'm not sure how I feel about incorporating the victim's wishes when assessing punishment on a perp, or when deciding on how vigorously to pursue extradition. I'm conflicted on this.

I know that the most moving movie I have ever seen was Polanski's brilliant rendition of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, starring Nastassia Kinski in the title role. How sad that brilliant artists like Polanski often wrestle with demons in their private lives.

All that being said, he's a child rapist. No two ways about it.

In my neck of the woods a man who drugs and sodomizes a child is not usually given "credit for time served while undergoing an evaluation, or placed on probation" without serving some actual time of some kind. They are usually thrown in jail. In 2009 just photographing the kid would be a crime.

Gee, I'm sure this guy wouldn't be prosecuted, publically shamed, and jailed if he was, oh, say a Catholic Priest and he had molested biys 20 or 30 years ago. Oh wait...

And you know, I'm sure those same Hollywood folks were preaching leniency and statue of limitations on that, right? Oh wait...

I wish I could say I was surprised by the reaction of Hollywood, but I'm not. This will prduce the usual outrage for a while, and then people will charge out to watch the next move that the director on the list directs and the actor/actress on the list is in. They live in their own little all-permissive fantasy world and can't for the life of them figure out why everyone else doesn't. No shock here.

Dpending on what happens with this, it will be interesting to see if anyone mentions it at the Academy Awards...they love to poke hornets' nests like these in that situation.
