Political Conversation and Debate This forum is not a temporary one. It will exist up to, and after the presidential elections. Some people want to talk or even argue politics, other's don't. Let's see if we can apply some reason and understanding to the debate.

James Stockdale dies...

one of the more amusing figures in American political history

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050706/...obit_stockdale

Future generations will wonder how the nation could have survived seeing Admiral Stockdale, Vice President Quayle, and Senator Gore on the stage at one time...

Dennis Miller had the following to say about the "public crucifixion of James Stockdale" who had a difficult time of it debating two media savvy men - Dan Quayle and Al Gore:

"Now I know (Stockdale's name has) become a buzzword in this culture for doddering old man, but let's look at the record, folks. The guy was the first guy in and the last guy out of Vietnam, a war that many Americans, including our present President, did not want to dirty their hands with. The reason he had to turn his hearing aid on at that debate is because those f***ing animals knocked his eardrums out when he wouldn't spill his guts. He teaches philosophy at Stanford University, he's a brilliant, sensitive, courageous man. And yet he committed the one unpardonable sin in our culture: he was bad on television.

"Somewhere out there Paddy Chayefsky must be laughing his ass off. We should be ashamed of ourselves. Could he have been our Vice President? Of course he could've been our Vice President. You think Al Gore is a charismatic visionary? His favorite film is Tron, for Christ's sake.

"And how tough can this job be, look who did it for the last four years. Dan Quayle ... shouldn't have been second in command of the Hekawi tribe from "F Troop," much less the ... most powerful nation on the face of the planet ...

"Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

Stockdale won the [censored]ing Medal of Honor for his country. He deserved a lot better than what most of the media hacks did to him. Maybe in his version of heaven he'll get 5 minutes alone in a room with each of the jackasses that took cheap shots at him. Of course, 5 seconds is all he would need to turn most of them into quivering bowls of jelly.

Somewhat odd that Dennis Miller is the guy that backed him up on TV, but I remmember when he said that. He was much better on HBO than he was on MNF.

I echo Lions sentiments. This guy was a true hero in every sense of the word. Some of the moral giants that have been in the oval office dont belong in the same room with this guy.

I actually liked Dennis Miller on MNF.
Funniest comment ever during a football game. I forget the game or the player but the wife and I still laugh when we watch games

"he makes a tackle, jumps up and beats his chest like he's Celine Dion"

Agreed. I thought Miller was pretty good on MNF. Those of us who remember O.J. Simpson in the booth know what a really bad football commentator sounds like. Not to mention the fact that Miller was an improvement over that former scUM idiot Dan Dierdorf.

As for Admiral Stockdale, I hope he's enjoying his retirement from this life in a place where there are no political commentators and no more wars to be fought.

The more I think about it, I believe it was the Hall of Fame game with the Houston Texans. It was late in the Third quarter and some backup. They were expounding on celebrations that players make after routine plays.
