I think besides us, Texas is the team best suited to knock off USC. Leinart is the trigger man for USC, and he usually gets enough time to watch an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm before getting off a pass to one of their many weapons. SCum's offensive line is good, but not great. Texas' front four of Wright, Dibbles, Crowder and Robison will introduce Leinart to the smell of grass, often. And the law firm of Griffin, Brown, and Huff will make sure Jarrett, Smith, and Co. aren't taking cute curl patterns, breaking weak tackles, and running up insane YAC into the end zone.

As for us, I think if our D-line can get any kind of push, we have enough overall firepower on defense to disrupt their offensive rhythm, if not stop them cold.

You need a great secondary to beat USC, as they have 3 great recievers. You need fast linebackers to keep Reggie Bush in check, and you need your front four to get pressure on Matt Leinhart. They have so many weapons on offense, its like pick your poison...

i agree with craig. as far a dominate proven good teams its usc texas va tech and ohio state. all traditional powers that are very good this year. all the others are sketchy even if they are undefeated.

Horse[Mark May]. Someone is going to put together 2 good halves (not just 1 like Oregon) and not get robbed by bad calls, and make it close if not win. Oregon was the first candidate, and they failed badly. Arizona State is next, followed by Notre Dame, and then Cal - where Jeff Tedford has annually outcoached Pete Carroll and USC's staff for the past 3 years with far inferior talent. Finally, you have UCLA, who should have won last year's game and will be looking for payback. Any of these games could turn out to be a lot closer than the experts predict, but then again, some of them could also turn into routs (e.g. the annual Heisman Presentation also known as the Notre Dame game). But not every game is going to be a 45-13 laugher like we saw last weekend.

in this day and age of modern football 10 years is quite a bit of time and va tech has been to a title game so thats traditional enough for me. all 4 of these teams were known to be the prime NC contenders and so far have lived up to it.

lets face it our current ohio state would romp over any ohio state team we had in the 80's. football has evolved especially in the mid to late 90's. every year in the past couple years osu, usc, va tech, and texas are always looked at with high expectations and rightfully so. they are all high caliber programs and IMO the 4 most high caliber at this point and time.

Va Tech will prove it to me if they can maintain a high level of play after Beamer goes. Teams that are traditional powers maintain a high level of play even with less than stellar coaching.

The thing about what Romeo did w/ Peyton is that 1) his d-backs were good enough to handle the colts wr's, but honestly, I dont know ANY team in the country can handle Jarrett, Smith, Bush, and all the other weapons that USC has, so its practically a guarantee that they get a mismatch every few plays. 2) college dbacks are more likely to make mistakes, especially against such great athletes, when playing a zone D, and USC just makes you pay virtually every time a mistake is made. NFL defenses make much fewer coverage mistakes compared to college, and thats where the Trojans make their money abusing teams w/ their ridiculous offensive talent.

i'd be a LOT more inclined to agree with you if NE hadn't been using a M*A*S*H unit in their secondary... Randle Gay and Troy Brown??? come on! a career backup and a freaking Wide Receiver are not exactly suited to stop the most dangerous passing team in the league...

and I know a team that can handle Jarrett, Smith and Bush... they wear Scarlet and Gray...

sorry, jeff, but my idea of "traditional" is quite different. while virginia tech has produced some good teams the last handful of years, they have not persisted with excellence beyond the lifetime of a high school freshman.

ranking based on win percentage (among major schools; not including 2005):

last 5 years - tied for 12th
last 10 years - 9th
last 15 years - 13th
last 20 years - tied for 23rd
last 25 years - 22nd
last 30 years - 22nd
last 40 years - 27th
last 50 years - 30th

ironically, college football programs that are considered historical powerhouses are too often considered such because of what they've done recently. obviously, usc has done a great job of making an argument for the consideration of the school as a recent football powerhouse. they have undeniably been the best school for the last few years. however, their win percentage for the last 10 years ranks them at 17th. 17th is good but not outstanding. nonetheless, usc still must be considered a traditionally good football program; they are the 10th winningest program of the last 50 years and have the trophies to account for it.
