| Political Conversation and Debate This forum is not a temporary one. It will exist up to, and after the presidential elections. Some people want to talk or even argue politics, other's don't. Let's see if we can apply some reason and understanding to the debate. |

Views on Weed/Marijuana & Consequences
Okay, so I don't use weed, and I think that it's a drug used by ignorant and uninformed people. I get in the argument that weed isn't as bad as cigarettes and alcohol all of the time. The only reason that I believe supports this theory is the fact that people use cigarettes and alcohol on a more consistent basis; or moreso than weed.
What are your thoughts on weed?

It should be against the law to operate a vehicle under the influence of marijuana. And uh.... that's all I agree with.

I have seen it lead people to stronger drugs and I have seen people use it and hardly be affected. Personally, I am against it. But, I work with other cops who say making it legal and taxing it may not hurt.
I guess the question I ask myself is, would I be OK with my children using it, and the answer is no.

Yeah, and it's the only marijuana law I agree with.

And alcohol leads to other drugs. And marijuana leads to other drugs. And prescription drugs lead to other drugs (and bigger profits). So on and so forth...

Marijuana is as harmless or as dangerous as any other mind-altering substance out there. It all has to do with the person using it. I have seen pot-heads end up as doctors and lawyers and I have seen them end up cooking meth in a trailer in the middle of nowhere stumping gerbils so they "won't get away". If you want to say that pot is dangerous because it is a "gateway" drug, then think about this. When you were in high school, it was easy to get alcohol. You just got your buddy's older brother to buy it for you. He was of age, and since you weren't going to tell anyone where you got it, and the repercussions of having it were, at most, an annoyance. It was pretty much safe. Besides, everyone you hung out with would drink, even if only occasionally. One night at a party, a buddy/girlfriend/sibling, Suggests that we "go get high." Of course you go. Or you don't. If you do, and you like it, then eventually you will want to get high again. You probably do it a few times with no ill effect, and eventually decide that you'd like to be the guy that rolls one up, loads the pipe or is "holding", but fewer buddy's brothers are around to help you out. Eventually, you have to make your own connections. So you do. If you are lucky, you get one that only has an interest in pot. If not, you have just walked in to a potential pharmacy.
I am sure that you can see where I am going with this. Yes pot is a gateway drug. So is alcohol. So is even going to high school parties where either of the two may be found. So is the feeling of empowerment that goes along with doing something you are not supposed to do without getting caught.
Should we outlaw keggers? How about beer? Smokes maybe? I doubt that most would stand up and cheer for those things. The thing that makes pot worse, The one and only thing, is that it is illegal. It is no more harmful than cigarettes, which are legal, and no more dangerous than alcohol, which is legal. Pot is the (big quotes) "Gateway Drug" because people have to get it through channels that the host of other drugs have to use.
Should people drive or do anything that requires sufficient foresight or reflexes after burning one down? No. Or after getting tanked or even tipsy? Of course not. Should it be legal? That has to be put through the legislature.

i do not smoke, but i'm pretty sure the board is aware of my views...

Wyo is dead right about the connection, and the walking pharmacy. when you go buy some tylenol, the guy behind the counter doesn't ask you if you want to try hydrocodeine, or loratab, or a percocet, or some cacaine, or lsd, or opium, or... when you go buy a six pack of beer, the chick at the checkout doesn't try to sell you some wine, or a bottle of Jack, or some 151, or some absinthe, or... you get the point.
besides, the only reason that it was made illegal in the first place was because of propaganda and deceitful lobbying by DuPont and W.R. Hearst.
