Here is a question nobody in the media dares to ask: why is voting for ClinTon a blow for woman's rights?

The success of Hillary proves that:

A. if you marry the right person, you can accomplish anything

B. If you stick behind your man even as he sticks it in somebody else repeatedly, you can accomplish anything

C. The more you play the victim, the more people feel sorry for you and vote for you

And, as I've said before, one of her biggest problems is that she doesn't run as a woman. She doesn't approach things in a womanly manner. She is dead set of proving she has more "balls" than the guys. It may be effective on the surface as nobody questions her "toughness," but in the back of people's brains it strikes as not genuine. It plays into that narrative that she'll say and do anything and that she is at her core dishonest.

After watching this PBS documentary I respect Rice slightly more than I did previously. It seems like she basically got steamrolled by the stronger personalities in the white house (Cheney, Rumsfeld) and wasn't as hell bent on war as the rest of them. That being said, she didn't exactly show much spine until Rumsfeld had done so much damage that he had to be thrown out, leaving Rice as one of the only original senior Bush advisers left and allowing her to throw around her influence more affectively.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton is proposing billions of dollars a year Wednesday to keep jobs from being shipped abroad as she appealed to blue collar workers in Pennsylvania, the next big primary contest where she hopes to trim rival Barack Obama's lead.

Obama seemed to ignore the former first lady, turning his political guns on presumptive Republican nominee John McCain to blast his stands on the Iraq war and the economy.

Clinton has come under pressure from Obama supporters in recent days to drop out of the contest because of what some see as the Illinois senator's insurmountable delegate lead with just 10 primaries and caucuses to go.

But the former first lady showed no signs of quitting as she focused on job creation and challenges to the U.S. economy at campaign appearances across Pennsylvania, which holds the next primary contest on April 22 with 158 delegates at stake.

At an economic summit in Pittsburgh on Wednesday organized by her presidential campaign, Clinton was expected to propose the elimination of tax breaks for companies that move jobs to other countries and use the savings to provide $7 billion a year in tax incentives to persuade companies to "insource" jobs in the United States

Pennsylvania and other states holding upcoming primaries, including Indiana and Kentucky, have suffered the loss of manufacturing jobs in recent years and have yet to transition to new industries and other ways of expanding their economies.

Clinton's plan would offer new tax benefits for research and job development. It would also create "innovation and research clusters" and provide $500 million annually in investments to encourage the creation of high-wage jobs in clean energy.

Let me get this straight. Companies are moving jobs overseas in part because most of the growth in the world economy is happening in emerging markets and American companies cannot be competitive there if they have to pay American wages and ship the product there. So, American firms create jobs in foreign markets, denominate their costs in the lower wages there, and then can fight on price to win market share in these growing markets. They bring the profits home. If they fail to compete there, then their competitors use that home court advantage to build economies of scale and then compete with them in the American manufacturers traditional home markets.

Example, in the weakness of the American car manufacturers, India's Tata Industries has launched cars here, well made cars, and they are going to push the Americans out of the market within a decade unless something is done. There was that little matter of them buying a couple of badges last week in Europe as well.

So, Hillary proposes that we penalize American companies that are at least keeping part of the pie and ask them and the sectors of the American economy (including you) to pay wages to give blue collar workers the illusion of a job, even if they are uncompetitive. As a consequence, she proposes that the parts of the American economy that do work and ensures that they also cannot survive in the long term.

Are the news services filled with economists talking about just how fundamentally stupid this idea is?

Say all you want about banana republics, but it must have been a lot cheaper for Mugabe to give away a few tractors in Zimbabwe than buying votes this way. Honest question... Where did this phrase "Clinton surrogate" come from? I haven't noticed the talking heads using it to rerfer to the supporters of the other candidates.

I'm no politico, but I don't recall people using it before - certainly not prior to the kitchen-sink strategy reared up its ugly head.

It's kind of a freaky phrase. It conjurs up images of the borg, and fetal farms from the matrix.

This past week, Vermont senator Patrick Leahy joined a growing chorus of politicians, pundits, bloggers, and Barack Obama supporters urging Hillary Clinton -- trailing by a little more than 100 delegates with a number of contests still to go -- to quit the Democratic race in the interests of party unity.

It is, in truth, an argument virtually without precedent in modern political history, at least at this stage of such a close race. And while it does have its origins in an effort to preserve party unity, it also has its roots in an odd and vitriolic crusade to purge the Clintons and hand the nomination to a candidate who has yet, after all, to win a single large state's primary (other than his own), let alone the nomination.

The fact is that, until now, candidates have rarely, if ever, faced such a concerted movement (featuring prominent names, such as Bill Richardson, and a column in Slate titled "The Hillary Deathwatch"), urging them to drop out before their rival has clinched the nomination. [...]

... Clinton is being held to a different standard than virtually any other candidate in history. That's being driven by Clinton fatigue, but it's also being driven by a concerted campaign that examines every action the Clintons take and somehow finds the basest, most self-serving motivation for its existence. Thus, in this case, when Clinton is simply doing what everyone else has always done, she's constantly attacked as an obsessed and crazed egomaniac, bent on self-aggrandizement at the expense of her party. Is there a fair amount of sexism in the way she's being asked to get out of the way so a man can have the job? You be the judge.

Lastly, at the risk of getting preachy right here, it's kind of un-American to end a contest prematurely. Did the referee call a premature end to the Davidson-Wisconsin NCAA tournament hoops game this past week because it was clear Davidson was going to win and the team needed to rest its starters for the next contest? The usual standard is that we allow contests to play out to a conclusion and we also try to allow everyone who wants to vote to have a chance to participate. Yes, the Clinton campaign has often been unusually negative -- a valid topic of criticism. But should she withdraw? Only if she's held to a standard different from the one we've always had before.
