SHERMAN FREDERICK: Hillary's best hope: racism

'Working class' means 'white' Democrats bristle at talking about this in plainer terms. They say Sen. Hillary Clinton has found her base -- the "working class." That's why she won in the Rust Belt primaries. That's her great hope in Kentucky and West Virginia.

But calling Clinton's strategy one of kowtowing to the "working class" doesn't quite say it, does it? Isn't this just old-fashioned racism within the Democratic Party?

When Hillary strategists say they are winning the "working class," they don't mean they are winning working people with a household income of, say, less than $50,000. All the exit polls show quite clearly that lower middle-class people who work split between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Clinton. The difference is generally skin color. Hillary wins the lion's share of the "working-class" white Democrats. And, sadly, as Hillary's campaign has become meaner and more to the point, that margin has become bigger.

The Clinton racism strategy first became apparent in Nevada, when her struggling campaign began to publicly talk about her "Hispanic firewall" against Obama among the rank-and-file in the Culinary union. It hit the national consciousness soon thereafter when former President Bill Clinton, after Hillary lost the South Carolina primary, dismissed Obama's big win as a race-inspired victory akin to Jesse Jackson's success in that state years ago.

Sen. Hillary Clinton is a smart, strong, tenacious woman.
Those qualities are ones that many of us have admired in her for years. They also are traits that cause a lot of other people -- including many women -- to despise her.

Some folk just can't stand a forceful female, an intelligent woman who is willing to stand her ground with any man and one who has the audacity to believe that she can be president of the United States.

Despite my longtime admiration for her, I must admit that in recent months I've lost some of the respect for a woman I robustly defended when she and her husband were being attacked by the "vast right-wing conspiracy."
Admittedly, more than a year ago I proclaimed my allegiance to Barack Obama by suggesting that he should be the next president. I also said at the time that should Clinton win the Democratic nomination, she could not win without Obama on the ticket.

It's clear now that she will not be the nominee, and it's even more apparent to me that she should not be.

Hillary can only win the nomination now by back room shenanigans, which is why the DNC created "super delegates" in the first place...just in case.

What their voters want is only one of many opinions under consideration by the, alleged, party of the little guy.

Actually, I think that it was a safety net in case the candidate with the most delgates self destructs on his or her way to the convention, allowing the party a method to pick a better candidate despite the prior caucuses/primaries.

That way you do not have to settle for a dead bang loser who implodes at or near the convention even if they have the most delegates. True, it can be a way to steal the nomination, but that is tempered by the harm to the party as a whole. Remember, the superdelegates come from everywhere, and for them to speak in one voice would mean that someone along the way screwed up and the nomination needs saving.

Actually, I think it was intended as a way to pull the party together when it is a tight and contested primary (think Carter-Kennedy). The "self-destruction" thing only works if another candidate finishes a close 2nd. Actually, they could end up fulfilling their duty by breaking heavily for Obama in the end to further legitimize his win of pledged delegates. It was also kind of a "reward" for party activists (look how many DNC members are supers). One of the problems is that it has grown over the years and their are too many of them now. I think you'll see a change before 2012.

Hillary. Stop, please just stop. Fine, you?re tough. You are going hard. I know, there isn?t a nominee yet, so the game isn?t over. The problem is, you are just making yourself look crazy, desperate, and the people around you are starting to look like complete fools. First, you were just going to steal the Super Delegates by cashing in all of Bill?s chips. Then you want to count Michigan and Florida, one state where you were the only person on the ballot, and another state where people were told votes don?t count before the election. First you were down with delegates, then the super delegates, then big states, then some imaginary delegate count that your people made up. The funny thing is, whenever you make up a new standard, Barack ends up beating it. This weekend I heard you try to say how important West Virginia is in the election. ?No president has been elected since 1920 without winning West Virginia.? Sure, that could mean that it is an important state, orrrrrrrrr, it could mean that WV goes which ever way the wind blows and doesn?t mater at all.

So HIllary, remember the last person who couldn?t drop out of the race?

Right. Remember how stupid he looked?

The worst part is, now HIllary is just saying stupid [censored].
On Friday, she said her base was ?working, hard-working Americans, white Americans?. What? Hillary, let me tell you how the English language works. When you speak in phrases like that, it means you are redefining the previous phrase. So that means that ?hard-working Americans? and ?white Americans? are synonymous. Which is to the exclusion of everyone else. Which is also code for ?You know Barack is Black, right?? Even old school Clinton devotee Charlie Rangel had to say, ?That is one of the dumbest things she could have said?.

Hillary, you are always talking about how tough you are. You?ve wanted to show that you can play as hard as the guys. You want to show you can fight and scrap with anyone from Chris Dodd to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Well it is time for you to Man Up!

That means to step down while you?ve still got some dignity. It is like a UFC match, Barack has you in a tight arm lock. You don?t need to get your arm broken to prove you are tough. There is dignity in saying you?ve been beaten by the better competitor.

HRC's campaign debt hits $20 Million. (Wash Post)

With her campaign falling ever deeper into debt, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton spent a rainy Mother's Day seeking votes ahead of Tuesday's primary here, turning a deaf ear to calls for her to leave a Democratic presidential contest she has little hope of winning.
Clinton aides continued to insist that she will remain in the race even while confirming that she is $20 million in debt. "The voters are going to decide this," senior adviser Howard Wolfson said on "Fox News Sunday," acknowledging the $20 million figure. "There is no reason for her not to continue this process." Wolfson said he has seen "no evidence of her interest" in pursuing the second-place spot on the Democratic ticket, contrary to rumors that she is staying in the race to leverage a bid for the vice presidential nomination.

Could there be other reasons why HRC remains in the race - perhaps $11 Million of them?

May 12 (Bloomberg) -- Hillar Clinton may have a financial incentive to remain in the presidential race for a while. And she has Senator John McCain to thank for it.
Clinton loaned her struggling campaign $11 million in recent months. A little-known provision of a 2002 campaign- finance law cosponsored by McCain prevents candidates who drop out of the race from raising money after the nominating conventions to repay themselves for personal loans.
Should Clinton fail to come up with the funds by the Democratic convention in August, she'll be out the $11 million. If she quits the campaign before then, she may find it hard to get people to keep giving cash just so she can retire her debt.
