Still mired in debt, Clinton seeks cash

(CNN) - It might be Barack Obama's convention, but Hillary Clinton is taking the opportunity to raise money off of it.

Days after the New York senator announced she would award one contributor a trip to the convention with her, husband Bill Clinton is out with another fundraising appeal Monday encouraging supporters to join the contest.

In an e-mail to potential donors Monday, the former president promised one contributor would have a memorable week with his wife, though he took care to reiterate Obama is the Democrat who the party will nominate for president.

The e-mail is a stark reminder the New York senator remains mired in campaign debt more than two months after she ended her historic bid for the White House, much to the aggravation of many of her supporters.

"You'll get to see Hillary speak on Tuesday, and Barack Obama - the next president of the United States - on Thursday," he wrote. "And I hear Hillary and you will have a chat - I'll make sure to stop by."

The fundraising appeal also comes shortly after it was announced Clinton's name would be placed in nomination along with Obama's and the same day one of the New York senator's most prominent backers, billionaire Lynn Forrester, expressed anger with Obama for not doing more to help the New York senator retire her campaign debt.

"He has provided her with a pittance compared to what the Clintons have given Obama," she said. ?Her debt could have been cleared within 10 days. It?s ungracious...

So....Clintons get to have self-serving political careers, for which Obama owes millions?

(CNN) -- Democratic sources tell CNN that President-elect Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton had a "serious discussion" Thursday to gauge Clinton's interest in the post of secretary of state, if she were offered it.

Clinton's response is unknown, although multiple sources agree that she was left with the impression that if she were interested in the post, it would be hers.

"There was a serious discussion to determine whether, if offered secretary of state, she would accept it," said a source close to the Obama transition team.

In these circumstances, that source added, a president-elect does not meet with potential Cabinet secretaries unless he is serious about making an offer.

Another source close to the Obama transition team said that asking Clinton to be secretary of state "has been of great interest to Obama for a while. You've got to assume that Hillary Clinton did not come to visit the city of Chicago."

Over the course of the past 24 hours, sources close to Clinton have softened their one-time solid public position that she would not be interested in a Cabinet post. Those sources now say Clinton is clearly contemplating various ways in which she can serve the Obama administration.

actually it probably will. the Hillary idiots will be plenty [censored]ed if he doesn't take her after confirming that she is in the running.

One advantage of ClinTon is that she is from New York - a solidly blue state. Her seat will likely stay blue. I'd rather Obama not take elected officials for his Cabinet from states where their replacements would be Republican down the road - Rendell (the Dem Liet Gov from PA just died, and he would be replaced by a Repub), McKaskill, Napolitano, Webb, Byah, Sebelius

I heard something this morning on my talk show about Mr. Clinton, in a sort of trade off for her appointment, has agreed to release a bunch of information but I didn't catch what about or any details. Anybody hear anything like this?

He released the names of 200,000 donors to the Clinton Global Initiative in order for Hillary to become Sec State.

Among other things, it was the list of all the donors to President Clinton's foundation & library. Vetting Bill was the big hold up due to the serious conflict of interest issues that could arise from the posting.

Clinton's nomination is the latest chapter in what began as a bitter rivalry for the Democratic presidential nomination. To make it possible for his wife to become secretary of state, party officials said, former President Bill Clinton agreed to:
_Disclose the names of every contributor to his foundation since its inception in 1997 and all contributors going forward.
_Refuse donations from foreign governments to the Clinton Global Initiative, his annual charitable conference.
_Cease holding CGI meetings overseas.
_Volunteer to step away from day-to-day management of the foundation while his wife is secretary of state.
_Submit his speaking schedule to review by the State Department and White House counsel. _Submit any new sources of income to a similar ethical review.

Thank you all. Sounds like his Global Initiative just got seriously hamstrung for her. It's not particularly global, for example, if he can't have meetings overseas or accept money from overseas.
