6 U.S. troops die; McCain tours Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) -- After a heavily guarded trip to a Baghdad market, Sen. John McCain insisted Sunday that a U.S.-Iraqi security crackdown in the capital was working and said Americans lacked a "full picture" of the progress. The U.S. military later reported six soldiers were killed in roadside bombings southwest of Baghdad.

Three times, he ended up losing control in the cockpit, and that doesn't even include when he was shot down over Hanoi and taken prisoner in 1967. Now the combination of his surprisingly poor third-place showing in early fund-raising and that embarrassing photo op at a Baghdad market has sent his presidential campaign spiraling downward. Given his five and a half years as a POW in Vietnam, even serious political mishaps aren't likely to faze him. But he has no easy way to pull out of this tailspin. McCain's in trouble because he is out of sync with the country and with himself.

I think his problem is that he tries to appeal to both sides and ends up sounding like a moron by switching back and forth all the time. The "straight talk express" is laughable at this point.

I agree with that, but he never really has a chance in primaries. He might be the leader in early polling, but that is just because he is the most recognizable in the beginning. Maybe, he really just says and does he feels is right, and ignores party politics, but this will never result in him winning a primary for either party.

The difference is, he does not cater to other people. Many times, it seems as if McCain is overdoing his attempt to come across as a centrist. Rudy, on the other hand, is only more towards the center on social issues, and always has been.

He has always been leftist on social issue that is what bothers the conservatives about him

But, what I am saying is that he is always felt like this, while McCain seems to make a point to come across as a centrist. I think this bothers people more than Rudy's stance on abortion.

John McCain "may drop out of the 2008 race by September if his fundraising dries up and his poll ratings continue to drop, according to Republican insiders," the Sunday Times of London reports.

The story is based almost entirely on buzz that McCain's fundraising for the second quarter will fall short. However, McCain's campaign "vigorously denied" the speculation.

Said one McCain campaign insider: "Reports of his death are greatly exaggerated. We?re in the precampaign phase when everybody is trying hysterically to read the tea leaves, but after September the lights will go on and everybody will see that we?ve got a candidate who has stood before, doesn?t need on-the-job training and has the resources to compete."
