Political Conversation and Debate This forum is not a temporary one. It will exist up to, and after the presidential elections. Some people want to talk or even argue politics, other's don't. Let's see if we can apply some reason and understanding to the debate.

Postive move in the poll numbers for McCain:

RealClearPolitics - Opinion, News, Analysis, Videos and Polls

Only down to Obama 1.2% and Clinton 1.5% on the national level.

Leading in Pennsylvania 1.4% and 0.6% respectively.
Trailing in Ohio 0.2% and 0.5% respectively.
And leading in Florida 9.3% and 5.6% respectively.

Would be interesting to see some other battleground states like Missouri, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Interesting numbers when compared to those two weeks ago that had Obama with around a 5% national lead on McCain.

Finally, I wonder how the national campaign will play out if McCain can keep those leads in Florida. That would be great news for him as he could spend more time/money in the midwest and perhaps make a run for California, which I have read he and his campaign advisors are aspiring to do.

McCain's numbers appear to have improved over the weekend on both Obama and Clinton:

Leads national vote 1.2% over Obama and 0.5% over Clinton
Leads Pennsylvania 1.4% and 0.6% respectively
Leads Ohio 1.0% and 0.6% respectively
Leads Florida 5.3% and 6.0% respectively

Awesome - while the democrats continue to eat each other's young, McCain gets a publicly/privately financed vacation for a few months.

Keep up the good work, Dems. Thanks.

Lots of time till November. I'd be cautious about drawing too broad a conclusion from polls taken now.

Wasn't Dukakis up 18 points going into the Summer?

The election will be about the economy and the war. Two issues that do not auger well for the Republican party.

Kerry narrowly lead Bush for some of the months prior to the '04 campaign entering it's final phase.

McCain is simply receiving a boost based on the certitude of his candidacy.

When he must face a certain, fully funded Democratic challenger, that is when the polls may be prescient.

John McCain 2008 - John McCain for President

Can you imagine McCain's temper tantrum when two of his final four teams fail to make the Sweet 16?

I quite agree, polls at this point mean very little. However, for someone who spends as much time in the conservative blogosphere as I do, these are very positive numbers as I constantly hear McCain has zero chance of winning because of his age/temper/moderate-tendencies/whatever, he is another Bob Dole who excites no one, and the radical wings of the movement who say they will not show up in November. These polls indicate that at least right now, when there is little media attention on him (debateable whether this is a negative or positive), he is competitive.

Grad, you can't look at McCain - where he was just a while ago when he was so low that he launched his entire campaign staff and was given up for dead in the face of a hostile conservative base - and not be very very impressed with him. Writing him off would be a baaaaad idea. Ask Mitt, Rudy and Mike.

I quite agree. I used to be one of those who thought McCain had zero chance in November. However, I have come to admit that I was wrong about his chances; and for Republicans his "maverick" and "moderate" image may be their best shot at retaining the White House--something very important to me as I want to see a conservative court come to existence for the first time in what, 80 years; and I also believe there is at least a 50% chance of the Asian arms race esculating into a major war over the next 5 years, and I don't trust today's Democrats to effectively confront such a crisis.

Yeah, it's been a really long time since we've had a conservative Court....

Most people hardly remember these guys: Chief Justice Roberts, and Justices Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Kennedy.

And the 1980s (Rehnquist, Scalia, Thomas, O'Connor and Souter) sometimes seems like 80 years ago, but really, it was just 20.

Anyway, I fear the day we have a "conservative" supreme court if the 80s and current make up isn't "conservative" enough for you.

How did I know you would respond to this very issue. You know very well those are moderate courts. Simply having 4-5 justices that lean or are conservative, does not make a conservative court unless you are so far left that your view is that skewed--though this may be the case if you can honestly say Souter is or ever was a conservative justice without laughing at yourself.

The Roberts Court (to date) of 4 conservatives, 1 conservative-leaning moderate, and 4 liberals is hardly conservative.

Likewise, the Rehnquist court of 3 conservatives, 2 conservative-leaning moderates, and 4 liberals is hardly conservative.

Oh, and Thomas and Souter weren't on the court in 1980s

I always shudder when I hear people talk about the need for a "more-conservative" or "more-liberal" Supreme Court. IMO what we need is a more competent, more scholarly Supreme Court whose members' primary agenda is the preservation of the Constitution and not in interpreting it in new and different ways. Roberts and Alito advance that interest IMO, as does Ginsburg. The fact that Ginsburg is probably Scalia's closest confidante on the court says a great deal IMO about both of them.

Clarence Thomas and David Souter should never have gotten nominated. They are an embarrassment.

Golly, I don't know.. maybe it's 'cause I'm involved with the Courts when it comes to my job and I have a pretty keen interest in it accordingly?
So, you don't want a conservative Court, you want a radical conservative Court. Like I said, such a Court scares the [censored] out of me. I won't rehash those reasons here... but, such a Court would be scary indeed.
Re Souter: Well, maybe Bush the Elder shouldn't have picked him. Not my fault your side of the aisle can't figure out who to appoint, or that the extremists you prefer get laughed out of congress.

There again, don't blame anyone for this but your appointing Presidents. You can particularly blame Ronald Regan (assuming you're calling Kennedy the "moderate")

Again.... blame your president. Maybe they shouldn't toss out a frigging whack job to see if that idiot can get past Congress before they go trying to find a real candidate for the position. Regardless, as I said above, if you want some sort of radical right Court... well... you haven't seen Big Business/Government get away with [censored]ing you until you have such a Court.

Anyway.... the "conservative" Courts in years past have firmly established that black people aren't actually people.... and are partly responsible for the crash of 1929 (in keeping very little check on business shenanigans) and so on.... careful what you wish for. We're in a precarious economic situation as is..... (which, incidentally, is ALSO a problem brought on by conservatives.... )

Souter 1990, Thomas 1991. My point wasn't the decade, it was the appointing President.

Regan appointed both. If they're not conservative enough for the right, themn maybe you all should knock ol Ronny off his pedestal a little.
