I'm not getting this either. By your rationale, if you get captured in combat you are somehow less of a soldier (?)...does that applied to getting killed too? Were the people who died (or were captured) storming the Germans on Omaha and Utah beaches somehow less of soldiers than the ones who made it through unscathed? Most soldiers I've talked to say the fact they didn't get hit just means they were lucky.

I know you're not trying to bash the military, I'm just not getting it.

Absolutely not, but the McCain camp has consistently tried to turn his capture into something that made him more of a soldier. In fact, they've gone much further and attempted to use his POW status as a means of shouting down any criticism of McCain's foreign policy credentials or judgment.

It's only natural that there would eventually be some push back with people telling him, "Shut up! You weren't George S. Patton; you were a junior officer who got his ass shot down."

That he subsequently handled himself with honor and dignity during his captivity is not something that goes unrecognized by the vast majority of his political opponents. It's just that we refuse to inflate that into his being the second coming of Clausewitz, Ike and Alexander the Great all rolled into one.

give McCain credit for refusing to bring up Rev. Wright, and never doubting Obama's patriotism.

He could have run ads on Khalidi and Wright but refused to do it.

Mud is easily slung in campaigns, and there were attack ads, but on issues that were fair-play. I don't think McCain has any reason to hang his head or be embarrassed after this election.
