Yeah, but I gotta say I regained some respect for McCain for his response, telling them to please quiet down, and continued to speak about the good things. Whether sincere or not, it takes balls to basically tell your supporters to knock it off. Classy move by McCain. While I'm extatic that Obama won, there is a bit of sadness for McCain as you could see his hurt delivering that speech. But as I said, class act move to do what he did at the end.

My main point is quite simple.... merely serving in the military does not a hero make. But.. it's unassailable. That is... it's extremely unwise for anyone - let a lone a person who's running for office - to say "OK, sure you served in a war, but you're no particular hero"

So... my point is this - I get sick of people giving a free pass to someone merely for serving. Merely serving does not a hero make.

I always hesitate to make such remarks because I realize how it goes against what American's are "allowed" to talk about (Ironically, I'll get a "You can only say that because a soldier died for you" response I'm sure...Which I call Ironic because it completely misses the point I'm trying to make - that is, it's irrelevant.)
There are certain things we say and we don't question... "Military hero" is one of those things. Well... I question it. I don't give you "hero" status just because you went to Viet Nam. I don't give you hero status just because you worked for the NYPD on 9/11. You MAY be such a hero... but... it takes proof, I guess is what I'm saying.

So... my hypo about the rapist friend of my father..... if he serves... and rapes... still a hero? I suppose it depends on if he's running for office and if they find out about the raping.... Is McCain a hero? I don't know... depends on who you believe, I guess. No doubt he's at least served and no doubt he survived intolerable conditions. But... is that a "hero?" Is being a POW instant "Hero" status if you survive? Are all vets heros? If so, doesn't the word "hero" lose meaning?

Not that it much matters... I realize my position on this is highly unpopular and I don't think I'll be saying much more on this topic for a while.

Good point... I guess it's less "unwise" than I was suggesting. It depends on how powerful your political machine is... I suppose that's even more depressing.

Nice too see a losing candidate give a good concessions speech, and not act like a whiney little bitch. Kerry, Gore, take some notes, while McCain will continue to be respected, both of you have slipped into irrelevance, and are laughed at.

While I didn't vote for Obama, or McCain, I could respect both of them, and Im glad that McCain didn't make me lose any of that respect.

It's always sad to see a once promising politician fall into the meaningless abyss of Nobel honors and blockbuster books/film. I wonder what ever happened to old Al Gore. You certainly never hear his name brought up 'round these parts.

I compare Al Gore to Michael Moore and Gordon Lidy. Sure they are relevant in their own circles, but that's about it.

Interesting that candidates who fought (Kerry, McCain) or were merely just in Vietnam (Gore) are 0-3, and McCain will likely be the last.

That was a nice speech last night by McCain. of course the press will swallow it up and forget Will Ayers, the "he's not one of us", the "real American" bull[censored].

Yeah - the military always assigns its third-rate soldiers to fighter jet pilot duty.....and just for fun they have them fly 23 missions over hostile territory just to see what will happen.....
