McCain: Iraq War Mismanaged for Years

BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Monday the war in Iraq has been mismanaged for years and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will be remembered as one of the worst in history.
"We are paying a very heavy price for the mismanagement _ that's the kindest word I can give you _ of Donald Rumsfeld, of this war," the Arizona senator told an overflow crowd of more than 800 at a retirement community near Hilton Head Island, S.C. "The price is very, very heavy and I regret it enormously."

BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Monday the war in Iraq has been mismanaged for years and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will be remembered as one of the worst in history.

Agreed. I think he is shooting himself in the foot over and over again by trying to cater to both sides.

We'll see. It's probably too early for him to do any real damage to himself with remarks like this. And, if and when the time comes, he's on record as distant from the Pres... which, while a gamble, is a safe gamble that people will be damn tired of the Bush come runnin time. But, if Bush gains popularity along the way (or the war, in particular) then McCain may have a problem with his remarks.

No. This will arise when it comes down to it. He will not get away from this. They are not stupid comments by any means, but it will hurt him in the primaries. Not very wise if you ask me, but this might be what helps him. Only time will tell.

I have to say, it'll only hurt him in the primaries if the GOP consensus is to stick to Team Dubya. If they are trying to distance themselves from "the old guard" as it were, they'll all be singing the same song on the issue.... more or less.. some more boldly than others.

We will see. If history has taught us anything, it is to calm down and wait it out. Nothing ever remains the same for a year. Many things will change.

Agreed. Rudi has stated time and time again that he supports the war and feels Dubya's plan in Iraq deserves time to work. McCain's latest blasts may help him get a little separation away from Rudi who is undoubtedly one of the tougher (if not the toughest) opponent to face in the primaries. McCain's comments were smart b/c he targetted folks who are no longer running the war. If the war turns around, he hasn't opened himself up to critics b/c he's not attacking the current war effort. I'm not a huge McCain fan, but I think this was a very good move on his part.
