While it is pretty much true for the whole country, I think the political divide between urban and suburban/rural populations is more pronounced in the Great Lakes region than elsewhere and hence why you see the divide.
Take out the metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis; and except for the college towns you will find some of the most conservative people in the nation living in Big Ten country.
