| Political Conversation and Debate This forum is not a temporary one. It will exist up to, and after the presidential elections. Some people want to talk or even argue politics, other's don't. Let's see if we can apply some reason and understanding to the debate. |

i just returned from brazil and was
totally shocked to learn that brazil has been 100% energy independant for years and years. most all of their cars now run on flex fuel and can take combinations of gas and ethanol at the same time. Sugar Cane is used to make the ethanol, the pulp is used to feed livestock, and the energy created is actually sold to towns for electricity. They import no oil at all, none. the government runs the whole thing and the price for ethanol is 1.10 reais per litre, wich is about 3.50 a gallon. the drawback is that the cars are all small. If brazil can do it without opec i dont see why we cant. this proves that politics is a big factor in the oil business. btw, my friends father worked at one of the biggest volkswagon plants in the world and he said vw had a hydrogen car in the 70s.

I read yesterday, somewhere on these fine internets, that some places - Brazil among them - keep transportation costs extremely low so that the rest of their economy doesn't collapse. In other words, if gas cost 5 bucks a gallon in Brazil, then people wouldn't be able to afford food because it would cost to much to get it to them. I'm pretty sure I'm saying that wrong somehow... but it's something like that anyway.
